The name arose during the 1934 Nurburgring Grand Prix when the Mercedes car weighed only 1kg more than the limit. The story goes that to avoid disqualification the team set to stripping all of the white paint down to bare aluminum, thus the name Silver Arrow arose as a result. That name was used to describe the Mercedes F1 cars from the mid fifties and has returned as a nickname for the current Mercedes Petronas F1 team which have dominated the series in recent years. This particular SL500 channels that same spirit as the Silver Arrows that have come before as well as after.
