The term "four door coupe" has become fashionable among automobile watchers, in large part because Mercedes has designed sedans with the rear end of the rood sloped like a coupe. This fashion has caught on in a modest way, but it all began with the large Mercedes sedans. The CLS550 was one of the first, with flowing lines and only two seats in the rear, which are separated from one another. It comes in various iterations, the CLS being a powerful version with a V8 that is deservedly popular.
The cabin is classic Mercedes, with tasteful wood trim and swathes of leather. Both driver and passenger sit in cossetted luxury, in seats that are designed to keep you comfortable on long journeys, yet support you adequately when the bends appear. You enjoy adaptive air suspension, set by a convenient button on the center console. A six-CD/DVD player and integrated navigation system with traffic and weather reporting make the journey more civilized. The 14-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system is out of this world. This is a very civilized environment for both daily driving and longer journeys. In traffic, the car is docile, with more than ample acceleration if needed, as well as radar cameras that protect your flanks. I headed at once for the freeway, for this was clearly an automobile designed for long, fast journeys. I surged into the freeway in seconds, accompanied by gentle growls from astern. This is one of the ultimate autobahn motorcars, capable of driving at the automobile equivalent of supersonic speeds for hours on end. Alas for speed limits, for this is a superb, civilized, and comfortable conveyance that will waft you in supreme luxury hundreds of miles a day. But there's more. I headed for my favorite country roads, went into sport mode, and reveled in the crisp handling and aggressive performance. Despite the car's weight, you can carve very nice lines out of steep corners and slaloms. The turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 can waft you from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds. I didn't get that quick, but enjoyed the wonderfully civilized growl as I put my foot down and was pressed into the back of the seat.
The CLS550 is ideal for affluent drivers who seek a nicely balanced combination of comfort, luxury, and speed. It's a large, authoritative car, but thoroughly entertaining to drive, something you might not expect looking at it. The flowing lines add additional pleasure to an automobile that will take four people cross-country, from California to Alaska, or wherever you wish. Few sedans rival this exceptional car, which is as good as a daily driver as it is cornering at speed on remote highways. Call it a coupe if you like, but it's far more than that.
This exceptional black CLS-550 has 10,000 miles on it and is in spotless condition. It is fully loaded, has been carefully checked out, and is completely as new. If you're looking for a large Mercedes with a touch of coupe in it, this is about as good as they get. This lovely car is priced below market and offers a major discount from new.
