Few people and cargo haulers came better equipped than the 2000 Mercedes-Benz E320 4MATIC Station Wagon. We have one of these German wunderkars here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars.
Made in Graz, Austria, this wagon was delivered to North America on October 4, 2000 with the following options - garage door opener; power adjustable front seats with heaters; interior and exterior automatic dimming; memory driver's seat, steering column and mirrors; rear side airbags; rain sensor; COMAND infotainment system; electric tilt/slide sunroof; five-speed automatic transmission; self-leveling suspension; anti-theft system; automatic climate control; xenon headlamps; 11-hole light alloy wheels; and integrated baggage rack.
This wagon is finished in Brilliant Silver (code 744U). The paint and trim are in overall good condition but there are a few blemishes visible upon close inspection, especially on the rear bumper. The windows are clear and intact and most of them are tinted. Exterior changes included a revised front with a steeper rake, similar to the CLK, and restyled bumpers and lower body trim. Driver convenience features include automatic climate control, self-leveling suspension, power steering, power brakes, cruise control, power windows, power and heated front seats and a sunroof. Safety features include dual front and rear side airbags and anti-lock brakes.
It was the first Mercedes-Benz production car featuring Xenon headlamps (including dynamic headlamp range control, only low-beam).
It rolls on radial tires, sized 215/55R16, and surrounding factory wheel covers. The tires and wheels are in decent shape but the 11-hole light alloy wheels show some road rash. This wagon's body panels are straight and very solid; the doors close with a vault-like solidity. The cargo area is in overall very good order, with just some blemishes on the carpet near the liftgate. There's also a cargo shade and a pull handle to close the liftgate.
Some wagons like this one had a Citroën-like self-leveling rear suspension with suspension struts rather than shock absorbers, gas-filled suspension spheres to provide damping and an underhood pressurizing pump. Unlike the Citroën application, Mercedes opted for a fixed ride height and employed rear coil springs to maintain the static ride height when parked.
The engine bay is very tidy and within it is a 3.2L 18-valve V-6 engine. Model year 1998 was the first time Mercedes-Benz offered a V6 engine to replace the previous straight-six configuration. Backing up this engine is a five-speed automatic transmission with Touch-Shift, which used the +/- gate positions for semi-manual control of the gearbox. This electronic system replaced the previous gated shift arrangement and simplified gear changes.
Inside, the wagon is upholstered in Leather Anthracite (code 211A). The seats, including the 60/40 split-folding rear seat, are all in very good order overall, with just some minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The matching black carpet is also in very good order, as is the gray headliner and the black instrument panel with its burled wood accents. The original four-spoke steering wheel is present while the inner door panels are in decent shape. The mirror glass, burled center console and shift lever all are in good condition. Rounding out the interior is a factory COMAND infotainment system, which was incorporated into the instrument cluster below the speedometer and introduced steering wheel controls for the audio/navigation/phone system.
In 1998, Mercedes-Benz re-introduced the 4Matic all-wheel drive system in the US on the W210. Although this 4Matic system shares its name with the previous 1990s 4MATIC system, it was totally redesigned and simplified. Rather than using the clutches and couplings of the earlier design, Mercedes used three open differentials: front, center, and rear.
Competition to this Mercedes wagon in 2000 included Audi's A6 Avant and BMW's 528i Sports Wagon.
