In 2010 Mercedes conceived and built a new supercar that would pay homage to the 50’s “Gullwing”, but use all of the latest in cutting edge technology available. The car uses Aluminum for the exterior body panels, large amounts of Carbon Fiber, and other exotic materials throughout the car. The car gets its prodigious performance from an AMG-designed’ dry sump, 6.2-liter V-8. The engine comes with a magnesium intake manifold, forged pistons and optimized tubular exhaust headers. The maximum output of 563 horsepower is delivered at 6800 rpm, and peak torque of 479 pound-feet comes at 4750 rpm. The SLS was the first Mercedes to use a new Getrag dual-clutch seven-speed transmission. The rear mounted gearbox is connected to the engine via a carbon-fiber driveshaft. The car’s advanced computer controls allow perfectly executed blips of the throttle during downshifts and make the car easy to drive fast.
