1960 Mercury Comet Description

You simply will not find another first year Comet in this condition that is a true survivor. An all Massachusetts car garaged its entire life. Bought in North Reading by an older couple and used sparingly (20K mi.) as a second car until 1973. The husband passed, the wife off to live with family and the car stayed in the garage, amazingly critter free until 1998. A Pepperrell, MA Ford mechanic heard about an estate clearing with a "Falcon or something" in the garage. He bought it immediately, put in a new gas tank, carburetor, radiator with overflow tank, brakes, radial tires, and a few other small mechanicals necessary when a car sits for 25 years. He put in a new rug as the car came without one originally. I have photos of the "barn find" from him. He drove it locally until Dec. 2014, adding 12,500 miles. I am the 3rd owner and have added a bunch of other mechanicals - rear coil over shocks, rebuilt the generator, new voltage regulator, original spec heater hoses, and my favorite, the reproduction battery. I detailed every square inch. I have all the receipts. Interior, trunk, exterior paint, wheels, hubcaps, bumpers are all incredibly original. The underside is as solid as the day it rolled off the line. Yes, the photos hide small paint blemishes that have been touched up as they appeared, but to me, they are part of the cars true history. I've added about 1,600 miles since. The story of the first year Comet (Mercury did not want it and would not badge it Mercury until 1962), the condition after 56 years and the mileage make it, to me at least, an occasional driver to be left alone and enjoyed. It drives true and smooth, loves the back roads at 40 - 55 mph. and has no issues on the highway at 55 - 70. The original AM radio and speaker work great. The optional 2 speed Merc-o-matic shifts as it should. The only thing it needs is a new owner to take it to the local shows where you won't believe that attention it gathers because they just don't exist. There was only 1 Comet in Hershey, PA's massive fall meet (Oct, 2015), a 64 Caliente. I went, looking for Comet stuff. I'm selling it to make room for the convertible I've always wanted, a 63 Buick Wildcat, which I just got. (It will help pay for it too). Please, serious inquiries only and you will need to arrange transportation as I am not a dealer. I will not release the car until cash is paid or a bank check clears into my account. I have a free and clear title ready to go. Contact me as you wish. I'll talk cars all day long. Happy bidding.
