1960 Triumph TR3A Convertible
1 of est. 9,500 Solid Body and Frame Rebuilt brakes and fuel system Rare factory heaterMotoeXotica is pleased to offer our latest acquisition, a stunning Triumph TR3 or more commonly referred to as TR3A. Despite having been bought and sold many times over the years, The Triumph Motor Company managed to produce some very eye catching and prized automobiles. In 1960 the ownership of Triumph was under Sir John Black which he named “Standard Triumph” On December 1st 1960, ownership was then traded to Leyland Motors Ltd. Model year designations for Triumphs were based on when they were sold from the dealer, not when built, so it is safe this TR3A was built under Standard Triumph. Officially there has never been a recognized model TR3A, only a model TR3; however after a facelift and other improvements these TR3’s are universally known as TR3A’s. The name change was to acknowledge the new front grille, which housed a larger radiator, exterior door handles, a lockable boot, a full tool kit, new floor-pans, windshield held with actual bolts not Dzus, and minor styling changes. Originally 58,000 production units sold, mostly sold to the American market, an estimated 9,500 are still in existence today.
Coming out of a gentlemen’s car collection in Missouri, this Triumph has been well taken care of and is in great overall condition. This is a very solid car; the floor-pans, as well as, the frame rails are in great shape. It has been repainted using the correct Sunset Red and shows very well with only minor imperfections and road wear. All of the exterior chrome is in great condition and shows no sign of corrosion. The interior is in good condition boasting optional black leather bucket seats, they present well with only minimal signs of wear and the foam still retains is form. Also optioned with the Smiths heater the dash board is original and in good condition.. All of the Smiths gauges function as they should. The car comes complete with top straps and a brand new black soft top, but no side curtains. Both doors function as they should and have new weather stripping; along with the windscreen.
The inline 4 cylinder true Triumph engine runs very well, making approximately 100hp. Although 100hp does not seem a lot it today’s term, it is more than enough to push the TR3A lightweight quickly down the road. Still retaining both SU carburetors, the entire fuel system has recently been flushed and the carburetors have been rebuilt. Both front disc brakes and rear drums have been rebuilt along with the clutch slave cylinder, allowing this car to stop extremely well. The 3 speed manual with 4th being an overdrive can match modern traffic without worry. With the estimated existing numbers of TR3A’s declining so rapidly, this is truly a special car. Perfect for Sunday cruises or draw attention at any car show.
