1999 Plymouth Prowler Description

I bought this Prowler 13 years ago off a lease deal from Texas sight unseen. It has been a great car, very reliable and with few real issues. I've kept in in a heated garage in the winter and taken good care of it mechanically. I had it wrapped and the wrap is still in very good condition, although it is fraying a little around the edges. The wrap can be pulled off leaving the protected yellow paint revealed underneath. There are some nicks on the paint on both the front and rear bumpers. The underside of the driver side bumper has some fiberglass repair work that has cracked as well as on the underside of the nose. I suspect that the previous owner hit a curb and had it repaired but over time the fiberglass work has fallen off. It's not that noticeable as the problems are mostly underneath the nose (See two different pictures).
A list of the mechanical issues I've had in the last 13 years- Small leak in the transmission fluid line.- I've replaced the turn signal stalk twice now. They are notoriously bad.- Both the driver and passenger power windows had issues so I took them all apart and repaired them so they will not have issues again (this is a common problem on this model) This was 5 years ago and they have been fine since then.- Once or twice a year air gets trapped between the radiator and the block causing the engine to run hot. You just loosen the bleeder on the top of the head and run the engine with a silicone tube on it and the air will escape.- Once in a while the left turn signal on the front does not work. I suspect it might be a relay issue but it's been hard to track down because it doesn't happen that often. It always seems to work when I take it in for inspection.- The Rear passenger side rotor is a little rough on the inside. The rotors are aluminum and can't be turned. I've had to replace these pads twice in the last 6 years. The rest of the brake pads in the car are fine. I recommend using ceramic pads in the rear because they wear much slower.
The Prowler has a new NYS inspection and I will throw in a large box of vinyl scraps that match the design of the car. The wrap is like a big sticker that you can pull off or if you want you can just cover up the logo and the phone number. I spent about 80 hours doing it and it cost around $3000 to install.
There is a light duty hitch and wiring for a trailer installed. The trailer I pulled had a bunch of kiteboarding stuff in it and weighed less than 300lbs total. You can probably pull a jetski or a very small boat, but I would not tow more than about 1000lbs with this hitch. The 1 1/2" hitch is a factory one and has a Mopar label on it.
People love this car. It gets a lot of stares and 'nice car' comments. Now that my midlife crisis is over and I'm happily married, I just don't drive it as much as it should be driven. The reserve on this car is very low and it's a great deal on a really fun car to drive. The tread on all the tires is very good, the brakes are good. I've never changed the tranny fluid but I'm including 5 quarts of Mopar tranny fluid specific for this car and a filter pan gasket. All regular maintenancewas done and I had both ball joints replaced on a recall. Two of the front rims cracked from potholes and they were replaced with brand new OEM rims.
Current issues I know of with the prowler
- There is a small amount of corrosion on the rims.- On the passenger rear fender there is a small crack on the fender (shown in pics)- The stereo doesn't work (I spent about $3000 on the audio system) but the amp still does. I plug my phone directly into the headphone jack and adjust the volume on my phone and it sounds pretty good. You have to turn on the stereo to make the amp work.- There is a split in the seam of the seat of the driver side seat (pics)- The soft top is in good condition but there are 3 wear-patches I glued on the inside of the headliner. There are no holes in the top although it probably only has a few more years of life left in it. (pics)- Both the driver and passenger grab handles have a little bit of plastic missing around the outside of the handle. (pics)- Repair work around the nose is falling off. (2 pics)- Chips & marks on the front and rear bumpers. If you can get away with it I would just pull them off. Not really legal in NY state, although it is in many others.- The leather on the top half of the steering wheel has come off. The leather on the sides of the steering wheel is starting to get pretty worn. The top half of the steering wheel is rubber not leather like the rest of it.- When the car has been running and the engine is hot you have to turn the key on and off 3-4 times before starting it or it will take a long time to start. If you cycle the ignition it primes the pump and it takes about 3 seconds to fire up, if you don't then it will take about 15 seconds to start. From a cold start you never have to cycle the ignition on and off. This is a known problem with the Prowler and if you want to fix it you have to pull the fuel pump which is submerged in the gas tank and is a nasty job.
Its a great car and it's never broken down on me, never gotten a flat, never left me stranded during the 44,000 miles I have driven it.
I've sold about $50,000 worth of stuff through ebay and have a 100% feedback rating. I want you to be satisfied with this purchase. If you want the vehicle shipped then you will need to arrange that yourself, but I'm happy to work with the shipper. If you want to come look at the vehicle before purchasing I live near Candor, NY and would be happy to arrange that if you contact me through ebay.

The timing belt was changed out as well at around 85,000 miles with a Mopar belt.

The low tire pressure light on the dash stays on as well and never goes off. It has done that since I bought the car although I believe all the pressure sensors still work. If the pressure on any tire gets below about 30psi it will start to blink. If it gets below 20psi it will blink and beep which is super annoying. I put air in the front right tire about once every 3 months or so when it gets low. I've never used fix a flat as that messes up the sensors. The rear tires never need air.

I put on mopar mud flaps on the front and rear but the front right mudflap fell off in a carwash and is missing. The other 3 are still there. Also the top does not leak at all although there are some wear marks. When I take it to the car wash if you pressurewash the side windows some of the water will work its way through into the car. The rubber seals with the windows are all still in good condition. The sun visors also broke off several years ago and I found them pretty annoying so I didn't replace them.

I went over the car again with a fine toothed comb. When you turn on the brights with the turn signal stalk sometimes the brights won't 'stuck' or stay on. If you push the turn stalk slightly either way while turning the brights on then they will stay on. I've already replaced that turn signal stalk assembly twice (a 30 minute job), it is quirky to say the least. Everything else on the stalk works right. I would wait till something else fails on the stalk to replace it as a new one from Mopar is over $100 (highway robbery). The upper rubber bushings on linkages of the sway bar on both sides in the front are pretty shot. The linkages are still attached but without the rubber bushings it rattles a little bit on the front end when you hit bumps and such. This is normal for a car with this many miles and does not affect the safety or performance of the car really, it's just annoying. The linkages are still attached and the lower attachment points are fine. Also once in a great while the driver side airbag light will come on when you start the car and not shut off. I suspect it is the clock spring (there was a recall on the clock spring for other models that use the same clock spring, but not the Prowler) but since I've only seen it happen a handful of times in the 13 years I've owned the car I would not worry about it. When you stop the car for a length of time and restart the light usually goes out again.

Two years ago I had to replace the harmonic balancer and did the serpentine belt at the same time. The air filter has been changed twice, but it a royal pain in the ass to get to. Probably due for a new air filter, oil was just changed.
