1971 Plymouth Barracuda 383 Gran Coupe Description
I've had this car for years and haven't touched it so it's time to go to a new home. There were only 258 big block Gran Coupe Barracudas built in 1971. There were only 161 made with this 383 engine. This is pretty rare in and of itself,. To add to that, this car had 2 fender tags of options.The VIN matches the cowl, rad support, door sticker, and fender tags. No broadcast sheet found. Clear NJ title in my name. Those are the options on the fender tag. The car also has the rim blow steering wheel and ralley wheels. The body has had a repaint at some point in its life from therarely seeTawny Gold to brown. There are a few routes that can be taken on this car. Obviously a full restoration is one. Another is just buy it to own it like I did because it is pretty neat to just have and is extremely rare. Another is to do some simple metal work and throw some paint at it and make it an awesome street car or a resto mod. This car is in really nice shape given it's age and being fairly untouched and never restored. It is also a very complete car, missing only a few minor things, unlike so many other projects that have been striped of so many important pieces. Here is a pretty thorough description, but if you need clarification on anything, please ask. It will need front floor pans where your feet go. The tunnel is good. The rear floors are soft where your feet go and one will need a patch at least. You may be able to save them but plan on replacing them just in case. The trunk floor is pitted but most of it can be saved. Filler prime would do wonders here. It will need a few small patches though. The trunk extensions are good at the trunk pan and halfway down the quarters. They will need some patches at the bottoms. 2 lower extensions are included to use for patches.The frame rails are all solid, as are the front factory torque boxes and torsion bar mounts. The firewall is good with a small amount of surface rust showing in a few spots at the seams. The inner fenders are solid. The passenger fender is nice but may need a small patch at the bottom. The driver fender is nice overall, but the inner lip is pitted and will need a small patch. The bottom looks like it will need a small patch too. But overall a nice easily fixed fender. The header panel is nice, surface rust but nice. The lower valences are solid but will need straightening. The grill is complete but has some cracks which can be repaired. It wasspray painted atsome point in it's life, which covered thestainless trim pieces. They are hard to see in the pictures but they are there. The roof had been replaced at some point in its life. I assume it rusted under the vinyl top or was damaged?It was done before I bought it. Outside of some small dings in the car, it doesn't look like the car was ever hit so that's the only reason I can think that the roof was replaced. The roof has some small dents and pits but is solid. It is currently in primer. The Dutchman panel needs some minor work where it meets the quarters but is solid around the back glass and trunk opening. The doglegs at the forward part of the trunk opening need some minor patch work but are easily savable. The doors are solid and straight with some small dings. The quarters need small patches at the lower front and rear. There is some rust just above the wheel. Personally I would not replace the quarters, but fix the originals. The wheelhouses look good except directly above the wheel on the outers where it meets the quarter. They are really nice where they met the trunk and trunk extensions. The flat hood is rusty and pitted underneath. Personally I would replace that with a different hood but if you want a flat hood it can be used. The deck lid is nice. The front bumper needs straightened. The rear bumper is good. Both have pitting but are good cores or leave as is depending on what your plans for the car are. The road lamps are missing. The interior is pretty complete and the original leather may be able to be saved, except for the back of the rear seat. That is a bit rough at the top where it goes over to the back of the frame. A seamstress may be able to address that. It also has a small hole. There is no carpet. The 6 way seat is intact. The rim blow is cracked and needs restored. The headliner is junk. The headlner consollette is present but needs cleaning. The dash pad is junk but pads are available aftermarket, as are caps if you prefer to go that route.. Gauges with the wood grain face are all present as Is the rest of the dash. The glass all looks decent except the windshield which is delaminating around the edges. The power windows seem to be intact. I never put power to the car so I don't know what works and what doesn't. All the trim is with the car except the rear window trim.The vinyl top trim is also included although it is not seen in the pictures. The 8 3/4 rear is an open. The 383 is gone and it currently has a 74 dated 400 and 727 trans. Non numbers trans. The 400 doesn't turn with a socket on the crank. I didn't push it hard, nor did I try to find out why. It looks like someone got a floor jack on the oil pan and crushed it so that may be it. That was never a concern of mine because the 400 is a perfect start for a stroker anyway. A stroked 400 or a modern hemi was my plan so being stuck didn't bother me. The Trans rolls in neutral and stops in park. Outside of that I don't know it's condition. I have a set of headers that go with the car. It also comes with the correct 960 radiator, the shroud which has a crack at the bottom, and the fan and clutch. I don't know if the clutch is correct. The AC condenser is present as is the compressor. It may be missing some AC parts but I'm not sure. All the big AC parts and lines are there.The power brake booster is present but Its not the original. The power steering pump is present. The original battery cables are present. All wiring harnesses are present. The 14" rallyes are nice. They have 2 center caps and 2 trim rings. It is missing 2 caps and 2 rings. The tires have tread and hold air, but are old and dry. The VIN matches the cowl, rad support, door sticker, and fender tags. No broadcast sheet found. Clear NJ title in my name. Overall this is a pretty complete and very rare car, with only 258 big blocks being made and only 161 made with this 383/727 combination.It will be an excellent project for someone, whether it be a driver, a full resto, or a clone, it is an excellent starting point for someone. I tried to be as thorough as possible with the description but if you have questions, please ask, or come look at it. I can only describe the car how I perceive it.
