1972 Firebird Formula 400 all numbers matching, Trans Am suspension
1972 Pontiac Firebird Description
Very Hard to find early 70's all numbers matching 1972 Firebird Formula 400. Very possible once restored this will be a $50K car in a few years. Some of these are at $35K currently. Put your restoration time and money into a car that will give you a return on investment. So many people dump money into restorations that they never can recover as the rest of the market has very little interest in what they restored. This is a real-deal 1972 Formula 400.
How often do you find a real 72 Formula 400 project plus one that is all numbers matching? There are a fair amount of plain-Jane base Firebirds and Esprits, some Formula 350's, but very few true Formula 400 models. This Formula 400 will hold its own against stock Trans Ams.
1 of 2,429 built in 1972
PHS Documentation included to prove what this Formula is.
Matching VIN factory stamped Pontiac 400 with its factory 7K3 heads that have the large 2.11/1.77 valves. Rated at more horse power than the 77 -79 W72 400 Bandit Motors.
The engine may need to be rebuilt as it has been 44 years since it left the factory. It does not run and needs to be broken loose.
Automatic transmission code M38 Turbo 350
Factory code Y99 Formula handling package which included Trans Am rear springs and the large Trans Am 1 1/4" front stabilizer and the Trans Am Rear stabilizer bar.
Factory Formula hood and factory dual snorkel air cleaner that still sports the GM decal. Try to find these OEM.The driver's corner of the hood has a small corner piece that will need to be re-fiberglassed on. Piece is included. Please notethe correct 1972 one year only grilles.
See photo for parts included -- Light bezels and buckets, turn signal lamps and housings, engine pulleys, window trim, loaded calipers, 1.25" front sway bar, rear sway bar, etc. I am not including all of the parts needed to restore the car, but the ones shown are included.
Floor pans appear solid; trunk pan will need small patch, right quarter needs small patches around wheel well. Rockers, doors, and front fenders are solid. Including replacement top metal dash plate as original has rust in corners by windshield; I do not know if rust has gone below metal plate or not.
The fenders do not appear to be the originals but they are period correct, one has the valance bracket and the other valance bracket comes with the parts. The doors may be from a 74 but I am not totally sure.
Interior is in good condition and almost complete. Most of these older years have trashed seats; these seats appear that they can be used as-is saving around $1K in re-upholstery costs.
This is sold as a project and as such the complete condition of the car is unknown. I traded a 77 T/A for this last September with the intent of selling this 72.

This is not a run-of-the-mill standard Firebird with only a Pontiac 350 and the standard Firebird suspension. It was a hot machine when it left the factory, and is a real-deal Formula 400.
