1977 PONTIAC CAN AM - LEMANS, RARE!! BARN FIND!! NO RESERVE!!!
1977 Pontiac Le Mans Description
This is a Project and needs some love. These are beautiful cars. This is a REAL CAN AM!!!! This car was said to have 200 HP. GM built this car to pick up the lemans sales. The body is from a LeMans GT and the shaker scoop is from theTrans Am. The instrument panel, console, and dash is from the Grand Prix. The story is that these cars were sent to Motorworks to have the hood cut out for the scoop and the custom rear spoiler added. The appearance package was added with the black rocker stripe and the tricolor red, orange, and yellow stripes with the CAN AM logo and T/A 6.6 decal on the shaker scoop. These cars also had a performance suspension. 5000 of these cars were scheduled to be built and the spoiler tool broke at Motorworks. It is rumored that 1,133 were built. Others have stated that 1,377 were built. Whichever it is, Motorworks could not get the tool repaired and that was the end of the CAN AM and Motorworks.
The Good: Very rare barn find. 1 of approximately 1,377 ever made. Only 400 or less remain in existence. Very restorable. The hood and front cap is in good shape. The doors don't look bad. The roof and the rockers look good. Most all of the parts seem to be there. No radiator and drivers side door sill trim. The air cleaner base and clamp are missing. The 1977 TH400 is not original to this car but turns when put in neutral. Plan to go through it. I was told that it may have a shift kit. Converter looks to be a stall converter. 1971 400 engine included but don't get too excited. It's locked up. This interior color is rare. I was told that there were very few made with the light buckskin interior color. Most were black, white, or firethorn interior. Most of the vinyl seats are in ok shape. They can be cleaned. The thin support wire under the front seat bottoms are rusted.
The Bad: The drivers side front floor board has some pin holes but the drivers side rear is rotted out. The passenger side front is good but some small rust on the floor. The trunk floor is good but the quarters are rotted out. The back glass has some small pin holes around the bottom corners. The trunk rim is pretty much gone. The windshield needs replacing. All of the other glass is in great shape. Carpet was rotted. The tires are dry rotted and will need replacing. This car was repainted black at one time. The tilt wheel is wobbley. The signal switch lever is also loose and may be broken. There are no radio and speakers. Horn button in center of steering wheel is missing. The drivers interior door panel is not the original panel (black). The filler panels are torn. All of the cardboard on the interior panels are rotten and is only good to use for templates to make new ones. There is no exhaust. There are stock cast exhaust manifolds and I do have a set of headers.
If you know what this car is then you know the value. I am starting very low with no reserve. I know the work required to restore this car. This car has no warranty and is being sold as is. It is assumed that you know how to restore cars and understand completely what the condition of this car is and what is required to repair it.
The pics tell the story. Contact me if you have any questions. I will do my best to answer them. I added a pic from another restored Can Am to see what it can look like with the right love. You can't go wrong with this car. This was the Muscle Car of the Mid 70's.
