1978 Pontiac TransAm
1978 Pontiac Trans Am 400 cubic inch engine Original Code 75 Mayan Red Description
1978 Pontiac Original Code 75 Mayan Red TransAm with the numbers matching 400 cubic inchengine selling at "No Reserve"! I recently purchased this 1978 Pontiac TransAm from a gentleman right here in Kenosha, Wisconsin in a package deal.Simply double click on the main picture of the auction pageand allthe pictures will be able to be viewed in the larger size by clicking the arrows on each side of the larger pictures.
TheseTransAm'shave beenescalating in value with each passing year, andthey arebecoming increasingly more difficult to find. I am selling this TransAm as needing a complete restoration where every part and panel will need to be repaired or restored in order to bring this car back to its former glory. This could also be used as a great parts car, but my choice would be to bring it back to life. I'm just in the middle of too many projects right now, and have no spare time for this TransAm. The mileage is believed to be correct at 62,438, but the area is blank under the odometer reading on the title, so there is no way to prove the mileage as accurate. I will explain everything I found out from the previous owner at the point of purchase. He said this is the original numbers matching 400 cubic inch engine, but ithas not been started in over a decade. The original engine specifications decal verifies this TransAm to be a 400 from the factory. The previous ownerhad this TransAmstored in a storage unit during his entire ownership. The shaker and the quadra-jet carburetor are the originals to the car. If you are looking to restore a TransAm you may as well choose a rare code 75 Mayan Red TransAm with a white bucket seat interior. I've always felt this is one of the most attractive color combinations in a TransAm. I would think that the majority of muscle car enthusiasts would tend to agree that a red body with a white interior is one of the most highly sought after models and brings the largest return on the resale classic car market.
The prior owner made this purchase with theintention of restoring this rare gem, but he had three other TransAm's. I ended up buying two of hisTransAm's in a package deal. He did not have the keys for this car, and it was missing the radiator. I just had a new ignition lock cylinder installed and I found a guy who had an original radiator out of a 1976 TransAm. The replacement radiator fit perfect and wasmounted in place in front of the original a/c condenser. The top plate that goes over the radiator is missing, but all the belts are still in place including the a/c belt. The two rear flairs seem to still be in usable condition, but the front two will need to be replaced. I don't know all that much about TransAm's, butI doremember every guywanted one when I was younger. In fact when I was in high school three of my closer friends all bought brand new TransAm's in 1978. One was brown and another one was white and the third one was black. After all what guy doesn't want a TransAm? An original Mayan Red TransAm wasn't seen very often. Their reasoning behind not purchasing a red one was because red cars back then had a higher insurance rate, and they tend to attract the most attention by the law. Needless to say an original red TransAm is becoming a very rare find. The winning bidder will most likely have endless thumbs up wherever they drive after this baby is restored. You should have an outgoing personality toown a car like this, because everywhere you go people will be attracted to you like a magnet.
ThisTransAm has some nice options that include Power Steering, Power FrontDisc Brakes, Tilt Steering Wheel, Electric Rear Defogger, Radial Tuned Suspension, Pontiac Rally Wheels, and Air Conditioning. The factory air conditioning looks to be mostly complete. This TransAmdoes still have the original factory sway bars and the positive traction posi-rear-end. From what I can see most of theoriginal factory parts arestill in place although the trim around the windshield and rear windows are missing. All the glass is in good condition with no chips or cracksin the windshield. The prior ownersaid this car hashad onlyone repaint somewhere in the past, but several areas on the car were touched up withsome redspray to save the panels that were starting to show wear. This TransAm body is all original except for one repaint somewhere back in the 80's or 90's, so itdoes lookfaded. The Screaming Fire Chickenand the TransAm decals werenot replaced after the repaint, but a complete set of those replacement decals can be found on-line at Phoenix Graphics for a reasonable price. This is a true TransAm not a Firebird made to look like one. All four head lights and bright lights were replaced with new halogen bulbs. The dashstill appearsinprettynice shape with just a couple small minor imperfections. The headliner is drooping, but may be able to be saved or a replacement will be in order. The front seats are showing wear, so a new pair ofseat covers were placed on the bucket seats. The console is in very nice condition. Usually there are aseveral burn marks from careless smokers on the tops of these consoles that have survived for 39 years, but this one is nice and smooth on top. The arm rest pad on the console will need to have the vinyl replaced, but still opens and closes well. There is an aftermarket old school Panasonic AM/FM Cassette stereo player in the dash with some Pioneer 4x6 speakers on the package tray under the back window, but the stereo is not hooked up. The area around the stereo on the dash was never cut up, so I do believe an original factory Pontiac Delco AM/FM could be mounted in the original spot if the new owner decides to go back with the factory look. That decision will be left up to the winning bidder. The carpetwill need to be replaced, but there is a set offour brand newblack carpeted floor mats. This TransAm has theoriginal interiorand does show wear, but isstill in relatively decent condition. All fourPontiac 15" inch Rally wheels have a set of four raised white lettered Firestone Firehawk P235/60R15 inch steel belted radial tires with very good tread. The Rally wheels have all four center caps, and all four beauty trim rings. I didn't see any evidence of this car ever being involved in any accidents other then the minor scraps as evident from the pictures. I'm selling thisTransAm as a parts car or a restoration special with an open, clean, and clear title that was last issued on 2/14/2001 in the State of Illinois.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1978 Pontiac TransAm with theoriginal 400 cubic inchengine andair conditioning listed at $43,750 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Theaverage condition value is $22,625 which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
Nada hasthe lowest condition value at $14,187 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The numbers don't lie! ThisMayan RedTransAm is a very valuable automobile if restored properly! Thesesecond generation 1970-81 TransAm's have consistently shown toescalate in value with each quarter. What you see is exactly what you get! I know with all the great parts this TransAm still has includingthe bucket seats, tilt wheel, console, shaker, original shaker hood, nice grille's, 3-piece rear spoiler, posi rear-end, rally wheels, raised white lettered tires, and a 400 engine will be more than worth the final sale price. This is a great car for a father and son project to bond as a family unit. Why not make your money work for you while your son learns how to work on cars. Any money that is invested into this car will increase the value immensely. This is a great car to restore and show up at your high school class reunion to prove how cool you still are.
