1965 Pontiac Tempest Custom 2-door Hardtop - NO RESERVE -
1965 Pontiac Tempest Custom Description
*.
Original 1965 Pontiac Tempest Custom two-door Hardtop, running and driving, un-restored aside from an exterior repaint at some point in the cars life. This car would make a great original driver, or would be a fantastic start to a GTO clone project.
I purchased this car as part of a package deal, with the intention of using it as a donor car to complete a 1965 GTO project that I'm working on. However, once I got it home, I realized that it was far too nice a car to tear down, so we decided to offer it at eBay auction instead. The car sat in a shop for many many years prior to us purchasing it, and we have done nothing to the car since it came home other than check it out.
Here are some details of what we found.
Odometer and title show 56,xxx miles, which was reported as original by the previous owner, and is shown as actual mileage on my title. After looking at interior wear, brake pedal condition, and other wear indicators, we're pretty convinced that this is the actual mileage on the car.
The car has its original 215 straight six engine, which starts and runs really well. Some black smoke on start-up, which goes away after the car warms up and comes off high idle. We think this is due to a rich choke setting, but did not get into it to verify. No knocks or other bad noises, the motor starts, runs, and drives really well. It has a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, drives and shift smoothly, and we have not seen any leaks.
4 wheel manual drum brakes, brakes work great, but since the car sat for so long, I would highly recommend replacing the hoses and checking the system out thoroughly before driving it too far.
Power steering works smoothly.
Wipers work, did not try the washer system.
Dual-tone horns work fine.
Brake lights, turn signals, headlights, and running lights all work.
Interior dash lights all work.
Original Pontiac AM radio will turn on, but only static out of the speakers. My guess is that the speakers are completely blown, but have not gotten into them to check.
Gas gauge works.
Speedometer works.
Manual window regulators work well on all four windows
The car rides on vintage Cragar-style rims with very old (1991 date code) tires that do hold air. The original Tempest hubcaps were in the trunk, and will come with the car.
The interior appears to be completely original, and is in very good condition for its age. Dash looks great, seats are perfect with the exception of a minor seam tear on the upper driver side corner, and one minor pull in the bottom bench seat (see pics). Even the carpet and floor mats seem to be original, a little dirty but in pretty good shape. Headliner and sail panels look tight and clean.
Frame has minor surface rust in places, but looks very solid throughout. Body panels are not showing any rust, however, there has been some body repair (bondo) work done in places, which can be picked up with a magnet. There is some rust-through in the front part of the inner rocker panels, and minor rust in two spots on the trunk floor (see pics), nothing too bad, definitely would not need a full pan replacement. Floor pans look good with no patches or rust-throughs.
Exterior is driver quality, the car was re-painted at some point in what looks to be its original color (Capri Gold). A good 10-footer with some imperfections, it could use a good wet-sand and polish to remove some of the imperfections. Chrome is fair with some minor dings and scratches, rear tail piece has typical pitting, and bumpers are showing some rust that has been covered with chrome paint (see pics). All glass is in excellent condition, with a minor scratch on the windshield from a bad wiper. Overall, the car shows really well, its a really good looking driver quality vintage Pontiac.
If anyone is interested in doing a GTO clone, I do have the correct 1965 GTO rear tail lights and front grilles, and I also have a Pontiac 400 with 670 GTO heads, roller rockers, and a cast intake that I would sell as a separate deal, feel free to call ((316) 833-9715), or contact me through eBay me for details.
