1968 Pontiac GTO .. Ultra Rare RAM AIR II CAR
1968 Pontiac GTO Description
1968 Pontiac GTO, P.H.S. Documented RAM AIR II car, 1 of the 199 Ram Air II 4 speed GTOs built in 1968.In case you do not already know these were some of the rarest and fastest musclecars ever built. The Ram Air II GTO was basically a factory race car.The package included a special engine block, unique cylinder heads,hi perf exhaust manifolds, functional hood scoops, and factory4.33 to 1 rear axle gears! Very few of these cars still exist and they rarely change hands.Correctly restored examples can bring well over 100k. That being said, let me tell you about this particular car.The car has had some work done off and on over the years but it has spent most of its time sitting around awaiting restoration. The previous owner was planning to build a street racer/weekend track car but never finished the build. It is an original April Gold car with black vinyl roof and black interior that was ordered with a few nice options including: hideaway headlights, console, remote mirror, stereo tape player,am radio,PS,tint windshield, tach and gauge package. All this plus the ram air equipmentadded up to a $4500 price tag. That was $1500 more than a basic GTO. As with most of these factory racecars the original drivetrain is long gone. Currently the car has a rebuilt and healthy sounding 1968 (casting#9790071)400 cu. in.engine with "670" heads, and an ATI Turbo 400 transmission with a high stall converter and trans brake provision. The rear axle is a Chevrolet Chevelle 12 bolt with 4.11 gears and a moroso brute strength posi unit. The car went into storage shortly after this drivetrain was installed so there are very few miles on any of it.The motor has an edelbrock torkerintake, headers, holley carb, MSD and Mallory ignition,etc..The car has not been on the road for at least 25 years. It does run and drive around my property.I replaced the entire brake system last year includingall wheel cylinders, master cylinder, rubber hoses, shoes, and even all the steel lines. There is a set of two original 14x6 rally 1 wheels on the front and two reproduction 14x7 rally 1s on the back. The redline tires are old but they hold air. The body is very solid. While in storage thepassenger rear 1/4 panel was replaced with a full N.O.S.1/4 panel and the drivers siderear 1/4 had a nicely done patch panel installed on the lower rear section. The original doors are solid and pretty clean. The driver front fender has plastic filler andneeds work. The passenger front fender is a reproduction with surface rust. The hood has no visible rust out but it does have hood pin holes welded shut and holes for a hood tach.I do think its the original hood because the bracing is trimmed away very nicely for the ram air pan.The decklid looks good. The roof, window channels, rocker panels, and framelook great. The drivers side front floor pan was replaced years ago.The rest of the floors and the trunk pan are very solid. There are some very small rust holes along the cowl to dash seam just below the lower windshield area. The front end sheetmetal is only installed with a few bolts to hold it on for transporting. The hideaway headlights are screwed in the closed position and the actuating linkage is not installed. The front bumper brackets are not installed but I do have them.I do have the original interior and 4spd console for the car. Most of the interior is in pretty good condition including the dashpad. The dash metalis cut around the radio holebut I have a replacement section from a donor car. I do not have the factory tach or the underhood ram air components. There are a lot of used parts included with the car such as,a 1968 GTO factory shifter and a 1968GTO Muncie 4 speed transmission, clutch pedal assembly,a 1968 GTO HD 3.55 four pinion posi rear with N case and ZH stamping,a used hideaway front bumper assembly with bumper brackets,GTO taillight housings that need a little work, tailight lenses, heater box, front inner fenders,etc.etc.Also several boxes of small parts, brackets, bolts, trim, etc.I have oldphotos of the engine rebuild and the 1/4 panel repairs, etc. I have the complete P.H.S. document package including the reproduction window sticker. The original vin tag and cowl tag are present and undisturbed.I also found a factory build/punchcard in the rear seat cushion that matches the cowl tag sequence number.I have a clear NJ title in my name. This is a project car that needs restoration. It is being sold as is.Feel free to come and see the car or ask questions before bidding.I have the right to end this auction anytime. I would consider selling this car without the current mtr, trans, and rear for 2500.00 less than the winning bid.I can remove all three and install the Pontiac 10 bolt that's included to make it a roller. The buyer is responsible for shipping but I will help anyway that I can to load it.
