This Porsche Cayenne S is perfect for anyone who wants both practicality and comfort in a luxurious package. With this spacious four door wagon, you can have the speed and performance of a sports car, but the comfort of an SUV. No matter where you are speeding off to, built in navigation system will be sure to get you home safe at the end of every trip. You will not find this combination of style comfort and luxury in any other car, this Porsche is certainly one of a kind.
Any car would have provided respite, but as my ride that week was the $64,900 Cayenne S Titanium Edition, I took particular pleasure in finding out-of-the-way country roads that would eventually bring me back to my lodgings. The more the week wore on, the more fun I was having navigating via the seat of my pants, shifting with the touch-shift-tiptronic six-speed transmission and using the very strong brakes and even stronger 340-horsepower V-8 engine.
Yes, a sport utility vehicle is an illogical medium for sporty driving. And I would’ve preferred driving a 911 over rolling ribbons of blacktop. But then I wouldn’t have been able to bring along two bicycles or drive three colleagues to dinner.
In Pictures: The Cayenne S Titanium EditionA sedan with folding rear seats would’ve done these tasks just as well and may have been even more capable in the sporty driving department. But the Cayenne would have been perfectly at home journeying through a mud bog, over sand dunes or through three-foot drifts of snow–sadly, none of which I did.
The Look
The Cayenne S Titanium Edition is a U.S.-only model. For the $7,700 premium over the standard Cayenne S you get the works: bi-xenon headlamps, 19-inch Cayenne Design wheels, unique interior color options (ours came with silver leather seats with black inserts), front and rear heated seats, heated side mirrors, silver-trimmed instruments, a bevy of on-steering-wheel controls, tinted glass in back and a navigation system. Plus badges that remind you that you’re driving the Titanium Edition. If you bought all of these extras separately you’d spend more.
Climb inside the Cayenne and you’ll spot some classic Porsche cues. The ignition slot is to the left of the steering wheel. The meaty steering wheel and supportive, sporty seats speak more to aggressive drivers. There are also controls you won’t find in a Boxster, say, to alter the ride height of the air suspension, should you need ten-plus inches of ground clearance on your daily commute.
The Cayenne interior isn’t super-deluxe. The current Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are slicker, and you’ll note that the Cayenne, while attractive, seems at best understated. We’d go so far as to say some plastic grades need improvement in this Porsche, though the seats are very supportive.
Despite its bulk and weight, the Cayenne isn’t large inside. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers as much interior room, and the wagon version has as much cargo volume as the Cayenne. But vision is superb, and makes the Cayenne a piece of cake to park. There are few blind spots from this car; obviously that’s key for tackling fire roads in your $65,000 Porsche, but it’s just as helpful when passing on the Interstate.
The Drive
Performance SUVs aren’t like other grocery getters. The Cayenne sends most of its power to the rear wheels, so it drives like a sports car, but can send more power to any wheel as needed. This isn’t standard operating procedure even for many all-wheel-drive sports sedans, which are often based on front-wheel (not rear-wheel) drivetrains. The distinction isn’t merely academic either. Toss the Cayenne through a set of S-turns and you can use the transmission, throttle and brake to achieve optimal handling. We don’t recommend trying the same trick with, oh, a Ford Explorer or Subaru Forester.
Handling in the Cayenne is absolutely intuitive, with the heavier steering effort you’d expect from a large vehicle. Too often, SUVs have overboosted steering so you have no idea what’s happening as you corner. The Cayenne lets you feel the road as a Porsche should. And with peak torque arriving at 2,500 revolutions per minute, you can access power to pull you out of a bend even if you’re slightly lugging the engine.
Should You Buy This Car?
We do have a few niggles with the Cayenne S. One is that the vehicle defaults to starting out in second gear from a stoplight. You can manually downshift via controls on the steering wheel, but if you don’t, the Cayenne S hesitates in its forward progress. To compensate, you’ll likely mash the throttle, which sends you gunning forward. It seems counterintuitive to design a Porsche that doesn’t accelerate fluidly.
Plus, the cupholders are undersized and underdesigned. Since this vehicle was created for American demand, why not make sure it fits an American taste for drinking coffee while commuting?
Still, the Cayenne was picked this year by Kelley Blue Book as the SUV with the best resale value, which seems to indicate that even a high sticker and petite cupholders won’t deter demand for an SUV from Zuffenhausen. Or maybe that’s just some quirk in the demand for used Cayennes, since even those who can afford premium gasoline aren’t immune to the trend of buying cars with better fuel economy. That could be why Cayenne sales are down over 30% this year. Or buyers may just be moving on to the next flavor, like Audi’s new Q7.
This SUV is based on the Volkswagen Toaureg; they are very different cars in every arena except off-road, where they are remarkably similar. The Cayenne is also remarkably similar on the road to the $49,750 Infiniti FX45, which handles twisty roads with aplomb. The BMW X5 has never struck me as quite as capable as either the Porsche or the Infiniti. Nissan‘s crossover is actually based on a car chassis (the same one that underpins the 350Z sports car), and for that reason seems to drive very intuitively, so you can push hard without fear of going too far. The Porsche has extremely high performance limits, so almost anything you’d try on pavement barely breaks a sweat for this SUV’s suspension or traction tolerances.
Too bad life isn’t performed on a test track, because where we do perform life (highways, parking lots, in stop-and-go traffic), the Cayenne, like its brethren, has some quirks that you may not want to endure. Then again, it all depends on what you want from your breed of high-ticket, high-performance, drive-over-mud-bogs SUV.

The V-8 powered Cayenne S Titanium Edition will be available beginning in mid-July. This sharp new addition to the Porsche Cayenne lineup of sporting SUVs features titanium-colored trim, exclusive exterior and interior finishes, and the Cayenne’s most popular options as standard equipment. The Cayenne S Titanium Edition will provide this additional content at a price point approximately 10 percent lower than a comparably equipped Cayenne S.
The newest Porsche SUV draws it moniker from the “Titanium Metallic” trim which is exclusive to the model. The exterior trim pieces which receive a finish in this subtle metallic hue include the roof spoiler, the frame and lower portion of the side mirrors, the front air inlets, window frames including the B- and C-pillars, door handles (with a body-color inlay), door-sill trim and the Cayenne S logo.
The Cayenne S Titanium Edition is available in four distinct exterior colors, including two which are exclusive to the new model: “Pure Red” is a vibrant and overtly sporting shade, and “Iceland Silver Metallic” is a classic light silver tinged with cool blue. The Cayenne S Titanium Edition will also be available in “Black” and “Marine Blue Metallic.” Along with the door handle inlays, each Cayenne S Titanium Edition features body-colored rocker-panel extensions, helping frame the standard 19-inch wheels coated in a Titanium Metallic finish. Also standard are four-pipe-look chrome exhaust tips, and 20-inch SportTechno wheels with a titanium-color finish are optional.
The interior receives equal attention, as the cabin of each Cayenne S Titanium Edition features an exclusive two-tone design. The two color combinations are “Black/Sand Beige” and “Black/Steel Grey,” with the dark finish covering the center sections of the seats and headrests, the floormats, the upper dashboard and door trim panels, the steering wheel rim and steering column, the front of the center console and the luggage compartment cover. In keeping with the model’s metallic theme, the instrument cluster dials have a metal-look finish, and the stainless-steel door-entry guards are embossed with the “Cayenne S titanium” logo.
Contributing to its stylish-value theme, the Cayenne S Titanium Edition provides as standard equipment the most popular options fitted to vehicles in the North American market. These include Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamically controlled cornering lights, Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with DVD/GPS based navigation, and an electric tilting/sliding glass moonroof.
Like the Cayenne S, the Cayenne S Titanium Edition is propelled by a 340-horsepower, 4.5-liter V-8. Mated to the standard six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, the Cayenne S Titanium Edition can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in only 6.8 seconds. The Cayenne S Titanium Edition can reach 99 mph (160 km/h) in just 16.8 seconds, and has a top track speed of 150 mph (242 km/h).
Like all of Porsche’s vehicles, the Cayenne possesses amazingly athletic capabilities, and thanks to the standard all-wheel-drive and Porsche Traction Management, these capabilities are not limited to paved roads. While many SUVs have an inherent tendency towards nose-heavy handling characteristics, Porsche engineers direct the majority of the V-8 engine’s torque (62 percent) to the rear wheels. This provides all Cayenne models with handling dynamics more in line with Porsche’s rear-drive sports cars, setting it apart in the SUV marketplace. These traits are so sought after by enthusiast drivers that the Cayenne has become the best selling of all Porsche models.
The Porsche Cayenne Titanium Edition goes on sale in the U.S. and Canada in mid-July. Pricing for the new model in the U.S. and Canada is $64,900 (USD) and $89,800 (CAD) respectively.
