1986 Porsche 944 Great Driver, Maintained, Garaged, Guards Red & Black Leather
1986 Porsche 944 Description
I am selling my 1986 Porsche 944. This is one of my personal vehicles which I bought last year with the intent of daily driving. I just completed a 900 mile trip in this car last month, and it gave me no issues whatsoever. The car is originally from California (Newport Beach Porsche) and lived its entire life there until the owner prior to me had it shipped to Indianapolis about 5 years ago. The previous owner and I have each kept the car garaged and maintained as it should be. I now have a company vehicle for daily driving, however, and no longer need it. This will be a great addition to the next owner's garage as it has been to mine. I own 3 Porsches and simply do not have room anymore.
This 1986 944 runs and drives excellently. I have owned 5 different NA 944s in my lifetime, and I can confidently state that this one accelerates, shifts, turns, and brakes as it should. The car has had the following notable maintenance done recently (receipts available):
- New Timing Belt, Water Pump, etc. in April, 2015 (less than 3,000 miles ago, $2,700)- New Clutch Kit in June, 2014 (less than 5,000 miles ago, $1,669)
I also just purchased brand new Lloyd's "PORSCHE" floor mats ($127), a Coverlay dash cover ($130), a 9X Auto Cup Holder ($55 and the only good cup holder for a 944), and a new leather shift boot ($20) that go with the car.
Exterior: 7/10 - The Guards Red paint is in good used condition. The front bumper modification and GT Racing Headlights really set this car apart. I believe the entire car was resprayed by one of the previous owners, but I have no record or verification. The paint on all panels shines nicely and matches perfectly. Some of the rubber seals and gaskets are getting tired and should be replaced at some point. There are also a handful of nicks and dings in the paint which should be easily visible in the photos. The rear hatch is in excellent condition and has a very dark tint which keeps your cargo hidden and cool when the car is parked outdoors.
Interior: 8/10 - The Black leather interior is in excellent condition. The seats have been recovered in the correct factory-look material and look brand new. The Dino steering wheel and Porsche Crest horn button are in excellent shape and really give the car a sportier feel. All of the power windows, mirrors, and seat adjustments work properly. The previous owner had the AC converted to R-134A and stated that it works, but I have never tried it (it has not been warm enough here in Indy yet). The car has a tasteful head unit with CD player and auxiliary input for your phone/ipod that sounds great. The dash has some cracks in it (I have become convinced that 944s came from the factory this way), but they are not as bad as most. I bought the coverlay dash cover because the rest of the interior is so pristine and I wanted it to match, but I will let the new owner decide whether or not to install it.
Mechanical: 7/10 - The car has a lot of great service history and runs/drives beautifully, but it does have a few items that will need to be attended to at some point. The car leaks some oil from the front of the engine compartment. I get 3-4 drips on my garage floor after the car has been driven. I do not know where the leak is coming from, but it has not been enough to effect the oil level between changes. Cold start-ups in this car are also a bit slow. The idle is a little choppy when starting the car cold, but it quickly warms up and levels off as it should. I would guess that this is due to some sort of adjustment, but I have not investigated.
The only items not functioning properly are the electronic sunroof and the odometer. The odometer stopped working while the car was at the shop for the timing belt service last spring after being taken our of storage. The car has been driven less than 3,000 miles since that time, and I simply have not had the time to replace the small plastic gear that is required. The sunroof does not move up or down, though it does latch in safely. The left rear latch (the mechanical up/down post) is not secured.
This is a great opportunity for the new owner to get into a beautiful Porsche that is ready to enjoy for summer at the lowest cost possible. As with all older Porsche cars, these 944s are also starting to grow in value as well. This is not a concourse car, but it is a very presentable and enjoyable driver that is ready to drive anywhere.
