Here’s a bit of an unusual opportunity to buy a GT2 at a discount. First things first, there’s no such thing as a ‘good deal’ on a rare and special Porsche, just a relative one. This is absolutely not a perfect car with a spotless history however, it is a mechanically very good example, and in exceptionally good driving condition. If accident history is a turn off, don’t waste your time reading any further. I don’t blame you, as I prefer a no-stories, proper museum piece example myself. If collectability is your goal, this isn’t the car in the short run (this probably won’t matter much in 20 years, but that’s not most buyers plans). If you want a good GT2 that you can get in and drive guilt-free, this is absolutely and unquestionably, the one to buy.

On to the all-important details. In 2006 there was an accident that resulted in an insurance claim for just under $99K CDN ($75K USD). It is not a salvage titled vehicle, but rather one with a large declaration due to the rather large cost to repair these vehicles. A front bumper cover is over $10K at present! We don’t have the detailed history on the specifics, but can tell what’s been changed from original and it’s pretty easy to see how it could have added up. I’ve listed them here:

·Left front radiator and A/C condenser

·Left intercooler

·Left rear upper control arms

·Left rear toe link

·Front bumper cover (TechArt bumper cover fitted)

·Rear bumper cover (TechArt bumper cover fitted)

·Fitted TechArt side skirts

·Entire vehicle has been re-painted. The standards that the car was painted to would not have made me perfectly happy as I’m tremendously particular, but it’s very presentable and shows very well.

·Centre of vehicle underbody had been re-painted due to scratches

Aside from this, underneath, all the structural parts are original (front and rear sub frames, uprights, struts, etc.), and the car’s alignment and geometry are not out of specification at all. This means that the incident couldn’t have been a high-speed collision, as there would, without question, have been a lot more damage done to the car mechanically.

I’m going to presume that you already know what a GT2 is on some level given that you’re looking at this ad, but beyond that, here’s a few important things you may not know. They were ludicrously expensive when new, at an average sale price of $200K USD, and were also rather scarce. In their production run from 2002 to 2005 the worldwide total was 1026 examples. Since they were an unapologetic ‘widow-maker’ of a car, with no traction control and 476 hp going through the rear wheels only, it’s no surprise many of them had ‘incidents’. This is the last ‘scary’ car that Porsche made, and it’s got a special part in the hearts of most Porsche enthusiasts for that reason.

It’s a car with little in common with a ‘regular’ turbocharged 996, and much more in common with the GT3 Cup race car, except with significantly more power and a luxurious full leather interior.

The only other market insight worth adding is that these cars are still very, very inexpensive when compared to Porsche’s other GT2 cars. A new high water mark in the preceding 993 GT2’s was hit last year when one went for over $2.2 Million USD, just for your reference. The later 997 GT2 was made in similar numbers to the 996 and sell for dearer than $200K USD these days. Sure, they’re better looking to most people’s eyes, but the 996 was nearer a pure driver’s car than the 997 for certain and history will likely favor the more raw and unadulterated one.

Aside from the aforementioned bad news, this car is in very, very good order from a driving perspective with the following other noteworthy items to report.

·Complete tool kit

·Complete owners manuals

·Both keys and remotes in perfect working order

·Differential has been rebuilt with Guard Transmission clutch pack

·Aligned to stock specifications.
