The 1972 Porsche 911 could easily be called the best of all the early 911 models. The key feature that makes the 1972 year special is the forward mounted oil tank with external fill or also called Oil Clapper in Europe. Placing the large oil tank forward of the rear wheels made the car better balanced. For the 1972 and 1973 cars there were many major improvements over past years, one of the biggest improvements was the 915 transmission which was the first modern shifting transmission fitted to the early cars. The 2.4L engine was fitted with a stroked crankshaft and lower compression pistons which mean the cars have much more torque and need less revs to get them going so they are easier to drive, especially in traffic. Further they can use any fuel available despite the octane rating. The lower compression adds to the longevity of the engines but they were also able to give more horsepower than previous cars through larger displacement. The last major improvement to the 2.4 cars was the suspension, the suspension points were revised to give better handling while offering a smoother ride. The 72 and 73 cars are almost exactly the same car but the 72 betters the 73 with the mid mounted oil tank and this detail is coveted by collectors.

This car was sold new on June 29th 1972 at Wester Porsche/Audi of Monterey California to a Robert S. of Walnut Creek. Included with the car is the original and rare to find dealer supplied maintenance book which shows the original owners name and address but also lists the original chassis VIN number and engine number – which are matching to this booklet. Also included with this car is a Certificate of Authenticity or COA from Porsche which backs up all numbers and shows it is in the original color with matching number engine and transmission. Records come with the car dating back to the late 70s and the original tool kit which is almost never with these cars is in the trunk along with the original jack and spare tire. All these items are essential to a highly collectible car along with condition and in the pictures below you will see that this car is in amazing condition.

This car is in all original condition. Aside from necessary maintenance over the years nothing has been deviated from the original build of the car. If this car was marketed as a 30,000 mile car then you would not have any reason to disagree although the entire history is known and it does have 133,000 on it at this time. Unlike the vast majority of early 911 cars on the market this car has never been modified, customized, wrecked, or taken apart. This is an important trait as most restorations are not what they seem. It is easy to take a rusty old car fix the body to a point where you hide all the previous damage and then throw a shiny paint job on it that looks good in pictures but the reality is a car that has ill-fitting panels, rattles down the road and looks awful up close in person. This would be the same as patching the foundation of a house, the damage is hidden and you would not know it is there until a later date when the damage resurfaces in a major way. It has been said many times that they are only original once, this car retains those original build traits.

The interior is all original except for the floor mats. Yes that is right the interior in this condition is all original and it has that fantastic old authentic Porsche smell. The doors close with the well-known Porsche ping sound. The trim is original as well and that makes the fit and finish so much better. The wheels have recently been refinished by Weidman the best in the Porsche wheels, tires are the period correct high end tire that was available in 1972 the Michelin XWX, a high speed rated tire that all the best sports cars of the day were fitted with. I will go out on a limb and say there is not one other 911 on eBay right now that has these quality tires on them. Headlights are real Bosch H1s, driving lights are genuine Hella 118 through the grill mount, rear fog light is an original 1972 version and not one of the modern replacements, all of the silver trim turn signals lenses are perfect original with Bosch script on each one, these were replaced with NOS parts in 2008 when they are last available, but not any longer - for those” in the know” the lights on this car are highly coveted.

The original engine in this car had been rebuilt which is common for these miles. Porsche designed the 911E as their starting point – they then dumbed down the engine and put lesser parts to save money on the Ts to offer them at a lower price point while they put more expensive parts in the S cars to offer them at a premium. The E has the best balance of all things considered so when the engine in this car was rebuilt it was done like the E using all factory parts which upped the horsepower by 20 to give a total of 165hp. The mechanical fuel injection was introduced for 2 reasons, it was more efficient so it helped the cars pass emissions requirements but this efficiency also improved the horsepower. It is critical on a MFI car to have a good working injection pump and tight throttle bodies – this car’s pump was restored and serviced by the best in the business Gus from Pacific Fuel Injection and the throttle bodies were done only 1000 miles ago by Aaron Burnham a Porsche whiz who knows these parts better than anybody. The result is a powerful smooth running engine that will not be problematic for the new owner. If you are considering an MFI car then make certain this work was already done or you will be subject to many thousands in parts refurbishment and it can take as many as 40 hours shop labor to dial in the new parts – tuning MFI is an art form that hardly any shops can do these days. Once dialed in they will run for many years with no issues. Recently the engine was tested for condition and it showed less than 3% leakage on all cylinders during a “leak down test.” This car can be described as a 911T/E, meaning it is a fuel injected 2.4L T and the E is for Einspritzer or Fuel Injection - further the engine is built to E specs so it has higher horsepower numbers than a stock T; the same as a E would have. To sum this car up it is the best year, in a very desirable color, in a condition where you would need to do nothing but drive it.
