Classic cars are all about passion. Some of the nicest classics we feature are those built by folks who invest a large amount of time and money into a project they simply love. And much to the surprise of casual onlookers, most gearhead's dream builds don't always involve Ridler finalists or a bizarre pile of one-off parts that serves as garage floor dcor. Instead, they're filled with impressive, well-done customs which wrap modern power, everyday livability and top-notch track manners in about five times the curb appeal of a factory-fresh sports car. This SEMA-featured Shelby was painstakingly crafted into a world class piece of automotive art during a professional, high dollar build. And, thanks to 50/50 weight distribution and a supercharged Mast small block, it provides an athletic pro-touring driving experience that creates the perfect platform for serious track days. Looking for a hot collectible that makes exotic European sports cars look downright melancholy? This killer Daytona is your one-way ticket to pure exclusivity!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Factory Five Racing has long been applauded for their great fiberglass work, and this Type 65 is no exception. The car's virtually flawless profile, a true replica of the original Shelby Daytona, is a 1-piece, hand-laid Vinylester shell that was laminated to 3/16ths, rotor-trimmed and covered in a .015-inch gel coat. That gel, thoroughly massaged by the professionals at Competition Specialties of Walpole, Massachusetts, lays excellent groundwork for glowing Ferrari Red 2-stage. Since pretty much every Shelby worth its salt needs some kind of war paint, the car was graced with bold, Graphite racing stripes. And ultimately, this super slick coupe rolled out of Littlefield Customs in Charlestown, Rhode Island with a mission to turn heads and drop jaws at the 2014 SEMA Show.

A clever descriptor for this wicked custom might be "better than best". That's because, even though the car is an excellent example of what was arguably Carroll Shelby's best creation, its 6% larger footprint features a roster of better technology. That increased level of sophistication begins with a mesh grille that devours air between LED-trimmed, British-style headlights and modern fog lamps. Behind that maw, an aggressive scoop funnels air through the car's serious radiator while modern windshield wipers clear a DOT Safety Glass windscreen. Behind that glass, polished, bullet-style racing mirrors reflect tinted, sliding Lexan, which perfectly complements a tinted DOT Safety Glass hatch. Below those mirrors, rowdy side-pipes frame original-style brake ducts, chrome, vintage-style bonnet latches and a familiar, Monza-style fuel filler. And behind that filler, a radical angled rear-clip seats Lucas-style taillights beneath a functional deck spoiler.

ENGINE

What good is all that 'show' if you can't back it up with a little 'go'? Tilt this Shelby's sculpted cowl and you'll find the forerunner to virtually all the technology still featured in Chevrolet sports cars: GM's potent Generation IV small block. Officially known as the Mast Motorsports 416 Black Label S/C, that brutal mill utilizes a 6.8 liter LS3 block to twist impressive 9.5 to 1 compression into 820 dyno-proven horsepower and 713 lb./ft. of torque. And despite consistently delivering track-blistering, low-end performance, it revs to 7,000 RPM and drives like a commuter car! At the top of the all-aluminum beast, a 2.9 liter Whipple supercharger benefits from an air conditioned intake charge. Beneath that blower, a Callies forged crank spins Callies H-beam rods and Mahle alloy pistons at the sides of a Mast 3-bolt Core Cam. Above that first class hardware, Mast Black Label heads hide Mast Premium Dual Springs under carbon fiber valve covers. There's a beefy aluminum radiator that's fitted with two SPAL puller fans. A factory-style serpentine system spins factory-style air conditioning. Charge comes courtesy of a proven Optima gel cell battery. The engine's rhythmic notes pulse through massive, heat-wrapped headers. And a 3-quart Accusump accumulator, complete with a thermostatically controlled oil cooler, details otherwise purpose-built performance.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

When it's time to put the wind in your sails, forget about rowing an outdated Toploader 4-speed because this modern-day Daytona blisters the pavement with a fresh Tremec 6-speed. Built by Bowler Performance Transmissions, that tough T56 Magnum utilizes carbon synchros to spin a fresh, 8.8-inch pumpkin, which mixes a proven WaveTrac differential with big, 4.10 gears. That drivetrain rides in an elegant, 300-pound frame that distills correct, 4-inch DOM steel and aluminum, race car-style paneling into a MIG-welded replica of Shelby's legendary MKIII. That chassis employs a fully independent suspension, which makes good use of tubular control arms and four Ridetech coli-over-shocks. At the front of that skeleton, Unisteer power rack-and-pinion steering makes low-speed cruising almost as easy as high-speed sweeps. At the corners of the floor, hydro-boosted Wilwood calipers, 6-piston up front and 4-piston out back, clamp 14-inch carbon ceramic rotors. Power meets the pavement through 3-piece HRE wheels, which twist 315/30ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals in front of 335/30ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals. And details like an E-Stopp emergency brake and Davis Technologies traction control augment the car's perfect 50/50 weight distribution and tidy 2,531-pound dry weight.

INTERIOR

Inside this coupe, Factory Five continues their theme of respecting classic form despite the addition of modern function. Adjustable bucket seats stretch custom leather hides, installed by New England Trim of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, under 5-point Simpson safety harnesses. In front of those seats, a wrapped and stitched dash founds traditional telemetry between controls for the car's Davis traction system and an Apple iPad mini that utilizes an Infinity CAN bus to integrate fingerprint security and pushbutton ignition with wireless audio and GPS navigation. At the sides of that dash, custom New England Trim panels front lightweight doors that, like the car's massive backlite, are securely hinged to Factory Five's tough frame. Below those doors, sleek carpet floats a leather-lined console under a small shifter and controls for the car's Vintage Air climate system. In front of the driver, a classy Factory Five steering wheel laps self-canceling turn signals, and a NASA and SCCA approved footbox. Behind the passengers, a surprisingly spacious trunk trails a wall of Memphis Audio speakers. And a sturdy, 6-point roll cage ensures everyone stays safe and secure.
