I'm selling my 2015 Tesla Model S 85D, partly because I plan to buy a new Tesla, and partly because I have a new job, with a shorter commute, so I don't need the longer range. This is my second Model S, with my first being a 2013 P85.
I also have this listed locally on craigslist in San Diego, so it is subject to prior sale. My preference is that the buyer sees it in person before purchase, and that it isn't shipped, since I have really to describe it in as much detail as possible.
I believe in full and complete transparency, so if you get through all of this description, I hope you can understand the vehicle history, and learn something about Tesla, too. I love talking about Tesla, and am still slightly incredulous, on a daily basis, that I can drive the Future, today. If you've never owned a Model S, it really will change the way you interact with your environment, and not just when driving.
I purchased this vehicle on October 13th, 2016, from a private party in Santa Barbara, CA, with 9,570 miles on it. The original owner took delivery in March, 2015, so I am the second owner.
As of December 11th, 2016, the car has 12,417 miles. I drive about 350 miles a week, so I am assuming that it will have about 13,000 miles in a week's time.
Configuration:
This specific Model S was, in my opinion, perfectly optioned from the factory for range, efficiency, speed, and safety. Add-on options from Tesla were:
1. Upgraded 85 kWh battery, compared to 60 kWh (see below for range discussion)
2. Dual motor, front and rear, for enhanced performance, range, and stability
3. Upgraded gray leather seats. This interior color was discontinued by Tesla in December, 2016
4. Upgraded silver metallic paint, which *pops* in the sunlight
5. Obeche gloss interior decor, including the obeche gloss yacht floor in the center console area
6. Perhaps most importantly, the Tech Package, which, at this time of manufacture included activated AutoPilot 1.0 features, auto presenting (and lighted) handles, power rear trunk lift gate, fog lamps, front cornering lights, and navigation, among others.
7. Supercharger (fast charging) access, grandfathered in for the life of the car, for any Telsa ordered before December 31st, 2016, and delivered by March 31st, 2017. Free Supercharging could save you hundreds of dollars a year if you take long trips, as the Tesla 400 kWh allocation per year will only be about 1,000 miles of Supercharging.
None of the superfluous or extraneous features like pano roof or air suspension were selected. Pano roofs, no matter from what manufacturer, will eventually leak, always squeak, let in wind, let in heat, let out heat, and also add weight (about 220 lbs in the case of a Tesla), which impacts range. In my personal experience, I never opened the sunroof on my 2002 Maxima in 10 years of ownership. Air suspension is the same: it will eventually fail, and (to my discernment) creates a disconnect with the road, compared to coil suspension. Dual chargers also aren't needed, as the car will fully charge in about 8 and a half hours, more than enough time for overnight charging, and at a lower cost from your utility, with an EV Time of Use (TOU) plan, if you don't have solar.
Dual motors, however, ARE a great benefit, as they provide better regenerative braking, better range (due to Tesla's torque sleep, which turns off and on the second motor, depending on driving requirements, better acceleration, better tire, and of course, better driving dynamics, with a more "planted" feel (especially in curves!), and excellent bad weather handling.
One thing that I definitely *love* about this car is the color combo: silver on gray, with a light textile headliner, and everything just feels so open, fresh, and airy when inside. In certain lighting, the interior and exterior almost looks white, and the gray interior has been discontinued by Tesla. There is no additional range-robbing weight, and with highest efficiency 19" Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires, the ride is smooth and quiet, to say nothing of driving on Autopilot.
Safety:
If you haven't read or heard about how Tesla has architected safety into the design of the vehicle, you might be surprised: Because there is no large front gas engine, the entire front of the car is a crumple zone, as is the rear, due to no gas tank or exhaust. The battery pack on the entire bottom of the chassis adds additional rigidity in case of side impacts, and lowers the center of gravity to improve handling and reduce the chance of a rollover. There are eight airbags, and Model S received a 5 star crash test rating from the NHSTA.
Autopilot is definitely better than a second set of eyes on the road, especially on the freeway. The safest feature to me is not the auto-steer, which actually encourages complacency, but rather the "traffic aware cruise control" feature, which will automatically slow down to 0, and accelerate back to the set cruising speed, in stop and go traffic. Automatic Emergency Braking can also be a real lifesaver. No kidding. Please see the pictures above with Autopilot enabled, with the car being able to recognize 2 cars ahead: If the Tesla sees the second car ahead start to break, it will start to break *before* the car ahead of you. Automatic lane keeping, and lane change, are additional aids that help to reduce driver stress.
Range:
I drive very conservatively, as can be seen from the low to mid 240's watt hour per mile (Wh/m) value in the instrument cluster. Of course, the car is very responsive, and will also Go Fast if you want it to: with the dual motor, the 0-60 time is 4.2 seconds. :)
With the dual motor configuration, range is increased compare to a single motor car.
Even though this car is 21 calendar months old, there is NO battery degradation. The two times that I have charged the car to 100% (the night of purchase, and on December 3rd, 2016, at the Supercharger at Qualcomm in San Diego, see pictures above), the battery still charges to 270 miles Rated (i.e., EPA) range, and 340 miles Ideal, (i.e. flat freeway, 60 mph) range. I usually only charge to 80% every 3 days, which gives me about 270 miles of ideal range. This is because the car sat for many months, due to the previous owners' illness, without being driven, or charged, so there are comparatively very few charge cycles on the battery.
Condition:
The car was always garaged (and I continue to keep it in my garage) when not driving, and in covered parking when at work. I spent two days washing, compounding, polishing, and waxing the exterior, and frankly, it looks incredible. The interior needed nothing other than a light wipe down, because it in fact still smells like a "new car". Again, I think this is from a lack of use.
The exterior is in excellent condition, with only one slightly visible item to note: a horizontal scratch behind the lower right passenger side fender, about 1 inch long. It is only visible in certain lighting, and viewing angles. There are a few light hairline scratches on the right front bumper, and a very small paint nick above the rear right fender. All of these items are shown in the pictures above, and really the only reason that I can classify the car as "Very Good" or "Clean" condition. There are *no* other chips or dents or dings on the hood, body panels, or windshield.
The tires are original Tesla-installed 19" Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires, with 8/32nds left on both the fronts and the rears, and they carry a 45,000 mile warranty.
The car has the latest firmware installed, 8.0. The car will continue to receive updates and improvements from Tesla over the air, which no other manufacturer does.
Maintenance history and service records:
There were only two service events that took place before I bought the car: a TPMS receiver replacement, and a 12v battery replacement. The 12v battery replacement was because the battery ran down, as the car wasn't driven for many months.
After purchase, I went through the entire car, and had the below warranty work performed by the Tesla Service Center in Miramar, at the end of November:
1. Replace front bumper black underside valence, due to scuffs and scratches, probably due to the previous owner going over some high driveways or parking lot high car stops
2. Replace rear door lower rubber seal double-sided tape, for improved noise attenuation
3. Replace rear "Tesla" trunk chrome lift gate appliqué trim with an improved version that has better weather stripping. (The majority of the pictures above still show the "old" version, with less relief on the "T E S L A" lettering. The "new" version has lettering which is more raised, as can be seen in the closeups of the last two rear vehicle pictures)
4. Replace the backup camera, as I found the older version to be blurry. The new version is crystal-clear
5. Replace the floor mats
6. Replace the rear trunk inner charge port access cover
7. Inspection (check logs, re-fill windshield wiper fluid, check tire tread depth, etc.)
Warranty status and Other:
All Tesla Model S have an 8 year, unlimited mileage battery and drive unit warranty, and a 4 year, 50,000 mile factory warranty. So, this vehicle is under the Tesla original warranty until March, 2019, or another 37,000 miles.
The license plate number is 7VWFV870
The VIN number is 5YJSA1H22FFP73709
The car registration is good until March, 2017, and I have the clean title in hand.
For those in California, you might ask: why does the car have new license plates? This is because the 2017 registration sticker was not applied to the car, even though it was paid for by the previous owner. The CA DMV charge for the new sticker is $20, and it's also the same price for a new license plate. So, I paid the $20, and also requested a new license plate, since it was the same price without the new plates.
White HOV stickers: the previous owner never applied for these, as there aren't any HOV lanes in Santa Barbara, where he primarily drove. I received these in late November from the DMV, but I have intentionally not applied them to the car yet, so you can put them in the most or least visible location for you. I have also blurred the serial numbers in the picture above. HOV stickers will let you drive in HOV lanes, with only one occupant, and saved me anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes a day, driving from Carlsbad to Irvine and back. Together with Autopilot, this will make your commute faster, and less much stressful.
Parts that are included in the sale are:
1. Tesla Universal Mobile Connector, with a 15 amp (6-15), 30 amp (14-30), 50 amp (14-50), and J1772 public charging adapters
2. Two original key fobs
3. Window sticker
4. Parcel shelf
5. Silver touchup paint, purchased from Tesla at the end of November, never used
6. Service records
