2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser Premium 4WD Description

Bought this car new in 2012 from Oak Brook Toyota outside Chicago about a year before I moved to Upstate New York.
Recently took a job in New York City and decided to sell my beloved FJ.

4 wheel drive, 4W High and 4W Low + 2W Drive

102,566 miles- About 85% highway miles the rest are normal Upstate NY roads. No off-roading, no mudding, nothing exciting in that regard, however I did use it to carry pretty much everything in my life for the last few years, that includes firewood, furniture and stuff like that, as a result the interior of the car has marks, dings and scrapes.

This isn’t a mint condition FJ, it’s a car that carried what it was intended and built to carry (that includes my canoes and kayaks on the roof rack, fishing polls, drywall, lumber and the occasional tile saw).

First a list of the good stuff-

I have the title, clean and clear, paid off the car 2 years ago, car is insured, and ready to be transferred to it’s new owner.

I’m the first and only owner, bought the car new and regularly have it serviced, about 30% of the time at the dealer, and the rest at the local Valvoline for oil changes. No major works has ever been needed on the car- no accidents, no mechanical issues. I did re-do the brakes about 4 months ago at the dealer and I had the Freon refilled (see below for explanation). I also had the serpentine belt changed at 60K.
Customizations- the car came with these two iron loops on the back, I decided to instead have the dealer install a trailer hitch, so they pulled the iron loop things and put on a trailer hitch.
No other customizations.

Car is garaged about 40% of the time (another reason I’m deciding to sell is that it’s a larger car compared to most cars in NYC), so I get charged an extra fee at most garages and a fair amount of garages don’t even allow SUV’s, which is annoying if you’re in a rush to park in New York City.

Radio, CD, MP3 hook up all work, Heat is awesome.

Transmission is good, engine is good, electronics are good, no powertrain issues, no fluid leaks, oil leaks or anything like that.

Wear and tear-

Once when I was loading a log into the trunk, I dropped the log and it bent some of the plastic on the back bumper (see photo)- not noticeable but if you’re looking for it you will see it.
The tire on the back has a slow leak- as a result every 3 weeks or so I pump it up, otherwise the low tire sensor goes on. New tire is $195- I was waiting until it was time to buy a new set of 5 before buying just one.

The car is black, so all scratches show up, there is one particularly noticeable one that you can see in the photos that spans the back passenger door to the front doors. There are also some on the hood, the back and the roof (although the roof is white so it’s much harder to see those, if at all).

As I said, the interior shows how useful the car has been at serving its core purpose. Each scratch, mark or scrape has a story, a log for firewood, a piece of lumber for a new countertop, or a cap stone for the stone wall I was building. I hope that the new owner uses the car as much as I did, it’s an incredible machine and I’m really happy I bought it.

The dealership claims that AC compressor has a pinhole leak—basically if the car needs Freon the AC doesn’t work—heat still works, but AC won’t if there is no Freon. It costs about $118 at the dealership to have them refill it, which I did last year. The fix is a new compressor which is about $400 to replace- was going to do it this Spring—no reason to do it right now as given the temp up here there is no need for AC.

The skid plate! Nothing wrong with the skid plate, but every single time I bring the car into the dealer or Valvoline the techs groan. Apparently FJ Crusiers have a HUGE skid plate that is a pain to take off and on. You have to remove it to get the to the oil filter to change it, so I’ve noticed oil changes which should take 20 mins tops, end up being 1.5 hours in the dealership. That said, the skid plate appears to be really good at keeping rust from developing too quickly on the undercarriage components, so the undercarriage is really great (especially considering how much salt and snow we have in Upstate NY).

Reason for selling- Love the car, it’s can fit a ridiculous amount of stuff inside of it, and in terms of safety it can’t be beat. I moved from Chicago to Upstate NY 2 years ago, kept the car registered in IL because I intended to move back, but ended up getting a job offer in NYC. The car, for all of its perks, is not the best vehicle to have in NYC, the garages either overcharge for it or don’t allow SUVs, the traffic is insane so I’m constantly concerned some taxi is going to hit it, and city miles are rough both on the car and my checkbook.
I have kept the car at my house in Upstate NY for the last year, but after careful consideration I’ve decided that it’s not worth the expense to insure, maintain and care for a car I’ll only be able to drive once a month at best. So I’m selling it.
