1985 Toyota 4Runner DLX Sport Utility 2-Door Description

1985 Toyota 4runner 4x4
Runs and drives great. Fires right up every time with no hesitation. Turns and stops appropriately. This truck has the great beginnings of tearing up the trail the way it sets or just a few components (springs, high-steer, tires) away from a rock crawler without having all the abuse from a truck that already is a crawler. Since it is being transformed slowly into an off road beast, (yet still a capable daily driver), it isn't designed for creature comforts or beauty pageants. I bought this as a great start but I realize that I'll never finish it. I have a few other projects ahead of it.

-22RE engine stock, rebuilt sometime ago, have some receipts. Copper radiator, Optima red top battery, Trail Gear battery mount.

-Transmission is from a 85 truck with stock (2.28 to 1) forward shift transfer case 170k mi. newer clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel resurface

- Marlin dual case adapter coupled to an older (79?) rear case with Trail Gear 4.7 gears, chromoly output shaft, and twin stick.

-Driveshafts, rear shortened to accommodate dual cases, front is stock from a land cruiser

- Bud Built dual case cross member/skid plate, with one stock, and one 4xInovations t-case mount.

-front axle, 4.56 ratio, V6 E-locker diff, 30 spline Longfield axles, Trail gear 30 spline birfields. Newer brakes, bearings. Seals are leaking a bit. Steel braided soft lines.

-Rear axle- stock, modified housing for e locker. Open 3rd member, newer gears and bearings,

-SPARE 3rd member is included!!! 4 cylinder style housing, 4.56 Trail Gear gears with a Lock Right that's been welded locked. Just a quick change out and you are ready for a day of wheeling!

-Good power steering.

-misc- Trail Gear rock sliders welded on to the frame, Mercenary Fabrication front bumper with quick release tow bar, 31x10.5x15 BFG ats in the front and Mud Rover rear tires. Tires are older but decent tread. Better than 50% but probably closer to 75%. Modified Smitty Built rear bumper, VW golf seats that are lower (so a tall person can see through the middle of the windshield) and much more comfortable, Dual brand stereo head unit. Rack in the cargo area is welded into position to the roll bar with air tank mount and fire extinguisher.

Known problems and projects to be completed....

-The suspension (leaf springs and shocks) are old and tired.
-The windshield has a lot of RTV silicone holding it in place.
-The windshield has a long crack
-The timing belt cover is leaking oil
-The steering knuckles are leaking and need resealed
-Rear gate has a board for a door panel. Definitely stronger than the stock cardboard but not original.
-Much of the trim has been removed from the inside. Doesn't really matter when you're building an off road beast
-Has a small exhaust leak. Sounds like it's from the manifold.
-The front E-Locker works but sometimes the solenoid is sticky. Tapping on the housing allows it to engage. I assume it need servicing.
-Rear gate and rear wheel well lip are 2 places that show rust through. Very common spots on these 4runners. The tail gate has bondo that has some cracks. The floorboards are solid with just a little surface rust only seen on the floorboard behind the driver's seat. Not structural.
-Right front fender is damaged but I have another glossy black fender that comes with it. Just needs some flat black spray paint to match.
-Original Center console is gone so the switches are located below the stereo on a custom switch panel.
-2 holes on the dash above the center vents from some thing that was mounted there in the past?
-Inner fender aprons were cut for suspension access at some point.
-Originally an A/C truck, but the compressor was removed prior to my ownership.
The biggest needs to make this a super off road beast is high steer, springs, and large tires and wheels
BUYER IS RESPONSIBLE for arranging shipping. It is located in Prescott Valley, Arizona. You can drive it home, use the tow bar to tow it home, or arrange shipping. I don't see any reason why it would have a problem on the road but I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE for anything once it leaves me. It is a used vehicle that is sold as is and where is. I will be completely honest and up front with what I know of the vehicle but it is still a used vehicle. eBay auctions are a contract so please bid accordingly. If you would like more specific pictures or to see or drive the truck in person prior to the auction ending please contact me.
