1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6 Description

Holy cow! This is one of the nicest Corrado’s you’ll see… and it could be yours!

1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6, 5 speed manual, 97,600 miles

Many years ago I spent a semester studying in Great Britain. Walking down the street one evening I saw something I had to have, a green Corrado parked on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. It was glorious; in the dim street lights it had such a timeless sporting shape. That was the spring of 1997. I spent the next year and a half looking for a replica of the Corrado I saw on the streets of London, and in December of 1998 I did just that, emerald green metallic, tan leather interior and a 5 speed manual transmission. This was a one owner car before I bought it and I’ve had it now for 18 years.

I bought it knowing it was my step into the wonderful world of European cars. It’s more than served me well. I wanted a real handling car and this car did just that. Soon after I bought it I did a few autocrosses and to me it handled like a dream but like everything in motorsport it could use some improving. I began making meaningful modifications to the suspension and slight power increases. VW, or many auto manufacturers for that matter, in the early 1990’s had a hard time getting their clear coat to stick to paint and because of that I did a bare metal respray in 2006. The best way to make sure the new paint would stick was to completely remove the factory stuff. My professional painter pulled all exterior pieces that could be removed making it very hard to see any paint lines. It was color sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. It’s long been retired from autocross but has won or been runner up to many car shows, most recently August of 2016.

In 18 years of ownership my Corrado was never a daily driver but always the fun-to-drive weekend car. It barely had 47,000 miles when I bought and in 18 years it now has 97,600 miles. I’ve been meticulous in its maintenance and upkeep. Everything mechanical is in tip top shape; I literally have every record from new. The previous owner kept what he had and I have saved everything since, it’s a pretty thick folder. I was a professional car detailer for many years and this is my pride and joy, I’ve washed and waxed routinely and the now 10 year old paint looks new except for a few rock chips in the front bumper. It was always stored in the winter and when out in the summer was always garaged.

Shift to today and unfortunately the car doesn’t get driven like it should. I track an old 911 and autocross a MINI Cooper JCW and instead of the Corrado sitting in the back of my garage it needs a new home for someone else to enjoy. I’m a driving instructor for both the BMWCCA and PCA clubs and do all my own maintenance and this car is ready to be enjoyed, mechanically it doesn’t need anything, I’d be more than happy taking it for a road trip. My wife and I took it on a fun drive through the Colorado mountains recently and she commented on how nice of an extended road trip car it’s always been.
