1979 Volkswagen (VW) beetle convertible - triple black - epilogue edition
1979 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Description
1979 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible "Epilogue Edition"
I'm listing my 1979 VW beetle for sale. This one is a very rare triple black model (black paint, top and interior) that Volkswagen produced at the end of Beetle production in Germany. This particular one was built in September, 1979, making it very late in the production run. They was made commemorate the color scheme of the first beetle convertibles made in 1938. As I understand it, Volkswagen allotted one per dealer, making them instantly collectible. Many of them were sold to collectors right before they ever hit the showroom. At the Barrett Jackson auction the past January, a restored example sold for $38,500!
While this particular one needs a little love, it's not too bad and with a bit of work, it could be something really special. I bought it last spring intending to repaint it, clean it up a little, enjoy it for a while and sell it for a tidy profit. As usual, life got in the way and I never touched it after driving it home. In a perfect world, I would hang onto it for a couple more years but i'm overwhelmed with projects right now so the time has come to let it go. When I went to pull it out of my storage earlier this week, all I had to do was charge the battery and it fired right up. It seems a little cold blooded but after the engine warms up, it runs very well.
The car came with an extensive service history as well as the owners manual and even the original window sticker! Interestingly, when I read through all the receipts I found that one of the previous owners was a friend of my later father's. I got in touch with him and he told me that he bought it in 2000 or so from the original owner with under 20k miles on it. He drove it for a coupe years in good weather and sold it on. It's been through a few owners since then and unfortunately, they didn't all treat it as nicely as he did. The odometer has just over 70k miles on it though and after looking through the receipts, I believe it to be the original miles.
Now onto what the car needs. mainly some rust repair and paint. At some point, it was repainted and I don't think they did the best job. I was told that at one point it spent a couple winters stored outside under a cover and moisture under the paint. There are several places around the car where the paint has come off and the is substantial surface rust but I don't believe any of the rust is completely through the metal. If someone was to strip it all the way down to bare metal and repaint the car it would be fine. there is a small dent on the hood and another at the left lower portion of the rear apron. the only rust i found underneath the car was at the front section of the floorpan half on the driver's side which would be pretty easy to sort out.
The top has been replaced with a stayfast canvas one and is in very good condition. The interior is pretty nice too. The is one crack on the dashboard (typical) and the headliner has pulled away from the rear window seal at the top. Th carpet and floor mats are in good shape. The seat backs have been fitted with some kind of sheepskin seat covers and I haven't pulled them off. It has a nice Momo woodrim steering wheel, a Pioneer stereo and extra VDO gauges for Oil pressure and volts.
The bug has also been fitted with a set of polished EMPI style 8 spoke wheels and the ties are in decent condition. It also has a set of after market disc brake installed at the front. From the all of the receipts for service work done t it over the years, it's clear that it was well maintained mechanically. The people I bought it from told me that the had purchased it for their teenage daughter but she didn't like driving a manual transmission.
Ihave done my best to describe the car honestly and accurately as i want the new owners to be happy with their purchase. If anyone wants any more pictures of specific areas of the car, please let me know and I will gladly provide them. I welcome overseas bidders. If you have any questions about it, please email me anytime or call 303-332-5014 during normal business hours. Good luck and happy bidding!
