This was my daughter's college car. When she left on her deployment in the Navy, she gave the car back to me.
On 10 Jan 2013, the Volvo had its 105,000 mile servicing that included replacing the timing belt. Mileage was 107,265.
In January 2015, at Odometer 118,645 despite having passed the Reno-Nevada smog test, I decided to replace the entire suspension on all 4 points of the car.
I replaced all 4 Strut assemblies, with new Bilstein Touring struts, springs and side-arms in the rears. I also replaced ALL FOUR Wheel bearings with Timkin Bearings (with sensors for the Anti-lock Brakes) and had the front bearings pressed into the existing wheel mounts.
All Four Brake rotors/Brakes shoes (I have an extra rear set) were replaced with Brembo parts. The only parts I retained were all 4-brake calipers.
I also replaced BOTH front axles with new FORGED Axles by IPD Axles out of Portland Oregon.
I replaced the OEM out-of-round Rims with ANZIO Vision Rims in Bright Silver from the Tire Rack (on 3-3-2015). At that point I went with 17 x 7.5's with the 5-108 Bolt pattern for the car.
I then installed new Michelin Premier A/S Performance tires - size 205/50R17 93V BSW on those rims.
I replaced both front headlight assemblies and installed new SilverStar Ultra Car Headlight Bulbs - H7 and H11 into those new assemblies.
The Right fender had a small crease, so I replaced that with a fender I bought on ebay and painted it the OEM Color.
After 2 years of outside exposure, it could use a repaint. Same for the Front Bumper which is fading.
The engine needed very little - a new air filter, Oil and Oil filter change, iridium sparks plugs and new battery...I even changed the Fuel Cap whose retention tie had broken. Got those parts from New Part.com.
With all new suspension, tires, rims (rims have McGard Locks on all 4) and brakes, I took the car to a local shop (Greg's garage) and had a 4-wheel alignment done.
With that done, I replaced the bottom Skid-plate with a new one from IPD.
When I change the Oil (every 5,000 miles), with fully-synthetic Castrol Edge 10W-30, I use an electric pump that will go with the car so the bottom plate is not disturbed.
The car has driven nice and straight with precision since.
On 11-17-2015 was the 2nd post-overhaul Oil, filter Change and Tire Rotation at 123,702.
On 5-13-2016, 3rd Oil, Oil Filter and Tire Rotation was at 128,029.
I did replace the Windshield on April 2016 due to age and pitting of the glass. The Headliner, in the back seats started coming loose and I glued that up with clear-silicone from Home Depot.
On the last Tire-Rotation at Costco, OD 133,011, it was found the rear right rim was not tracking straight so I replaced that rim with a similar but not exact 17" x 7.5 Rim. See if you can see the difference.
Almost every other S40 you'll see that are for sale, are worn out cars with little upkeep. Not here.
It probably wasn't worth the money to restore this little car's original driving experience but I wanted to see if I could do all the work and I did.
A relative who has just lost their driver's license has now offered me their new Toyota Sedan....so Volvo needs a new home.
If you appreciate a "Sports Car" sedan and that road-feel or if you are looking for a dependable little car without applying for a mortgage, then perhaps this car is for you. I just got it smog'd again in Reno and she passed; certificate is good for 90 days.
NOTE: The Engine Light sometimes comes on and my Blue-Tooth-diagnostic tool (Torque (Lite) App) is saying the Fuel Pressure-rail pressure input is low, but the car runs great. I figure the sensor is failing.
Also, the Car came with Volvo's version of Trip-tronic Transmission but that ability to electronically shift has never worked and I drive the car normally in automatic (P-R-N-D) anyway so I never investigated to get that fixed.
The "Wet" mode of the transmission works like a charm in snow and de-rates the engine and transmission to avoid slipping in wet conditions.
I changed the Oil and Oil filter for a 4th time on January 11, 2016 at 133,197 miles.
Today when I took pictures, the OD was at 133,394.
All those above repairs I did listed above, have but 14,749 miles on them.
