1972 BMW 2002 Base Sedan 2-Door Description

The iconic BMW 2002 was the next step in an evolutionary process that was preceded by the 1600 series. The model 2002, and especially the Roundie 2002s, was the beginning of over a half-century of German car collector and driver enthusiast passion for ownership. Among those who love the BMW tradition, there are the 2002 owners past and present, and those who plan to be a 2002 owner. If you’re waiting for the right car, then look no further my 2002 friend, there is no better example of the perfect 2002 to get into than this one. All the hard work has been done.

Allow me to present my 1972 BMW 2002. She rolled off the assembly line September 21st, 1971 and was delivered to J.B.S. in Frankfurt/Main, a BMW military sales contractor in the color of Colorado, paint code 002 (of which she is still maintains). The number of her owners is not known, but a serious restoration investor put $50,000+ into her between 2007 and 2009 in a windows and drivetrain out restoration.

Now the exciting part! She It was rebuilt to “Ti” specification (dual carbs) and tastefully upgraded for enhanced performance and safety (the only visible non-stock addition is the period-correct set of Panasport wheels):

  • Body: completely restored (windows and drivetrain train out)
  • Interior: complete replacement including all new seat covering/ cushions, carpets, headliner, door panels, trim using OEM parts. Original Blaupunkt radio was gutted and refitted with a modern audio component with a discreet aux. cord jack and 6 discreet speakers (looks stock; sounds great!), back seat retracting 3-point seat belts installed, Dynamat sound proofing completely underlies all carpeted areas and seats.
  • Engine: full rebuild with 9.5 to 1 CR pistons (Ireland engineering), Schrick 292 cam, new rockers and eccentrics, dual Weber 40DCOE carbs and manifold, BMW 320i radiator with electric fan, new bearings, seals, gaskets, oil pump, mounts, etc, 4 into 1 exhaust headers, high capacity alternator.
  • Driveline: 5 speed from BMW 320i (new seals), limited slip differential (320i, new seals), new transmission and differential mounts, new driveshaft rotoflex, U joints, CV joints/boots, new wheel bearings and seals.
  • Suspension: 4 new Bilstein shocks, 4 new Eibach springs (slightly stiffer and lower), larger front sway bar, rear sway bar added, new tie rod
  • ends and ball joints. The car has almost zero body roll, yet has a compliant, comfortable ride.
  • Brakes: larger front calipers (Volvo), 320i vented front discs and larger rear drum assembly, new lines and hoses
  • Misc: high wattage halogen headlights, driving lights and fog lights (this car lights up the road, bigtime!), 14X6 Panasport wheels with very grippy 185/65X14 Pirelli P4 tires, custom contoured orange fleece car cover with BMW logo is included.
Since 2010 (post restoration), I have meticulously maintained and regularly driven (2000-3000 miles annually) this fantastic car; it is thoroughly sorted and reliable. This gorgeous 2002 is very quick, handles extremely well and is exceptionally comfortable.

Her most recent tune-up included a new fuel pump (the old one started to make a different tone one afternoon) and a brand new NAPA battery. At this point, the only thing she needs is a a shift bushing kit because the shift rod is a little less-precise than it could be, the windshield took two small rocks on a recent trip to California and those spots have spidered, there are the beginnings of nickel-sized rust bubbles on the bottom rear of the front fenders and some of the same on the rear fender flares (not very serious at this point), the differential rear cover gasket and the oil pan gasket need replacing (gaskets included with purchase). If I was to keep the car, the only serious aesthetic additions I would make are to buy some nice Coco mats and have the steering wheel covered in Napa leather (but the last time I mentioned the steering wheel idea to a BMW collector, I thought he was going to have a coronary as he insisted I keep it original). I’ll leave those things for the next owner to customize to their liking.

The car is located in Seattle, Washington. She comes with a tall stack of restoration and service receipts dating back to the 2007-2009 restoration phase. Her current place of residence is Seattle, Washington and pre-buy inspections are welcome at your expense at the BMW Indie shop of your choice. If you don’t have any shops in mind, I can recommend at least two.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss her in more detail. two oh six 795-7003. Thanks for looking!
