Up for sale is my 2000 (E39) BMW M5, in Carbon Black over black extended leather. I have owned it since 2010, and bought it from a friend who owned it since 2008. It’s been an outstanding vehicle- design, performance, safety, and even reliability are hard to beat with these, and I have maintained it thoroughly and carefully. But given other vehicles / needs I simply do not use it enough anymore, so it’s time for a new home. No known accidents, and clean Carfax- and the car has been titled in CA since new. It has been garaged, and driven only occasionally (10k miles in 6 years) during my ownership. Someone who wants a clean, enthusiast-owned, unmodified, lower-mileage M5 will really enjoy this.
We have two keys, books / manuals, service records during our ownership, and a small number of spare parts (pads, rotors, BMW lower control arms, unused front license plate bracket, etc.) Condition / maintenance details are as follows; note that all maintenance has been performed either by Edge Motorsports in Dublin, CA (well-regarded independent BMW shop) or by me (BMWCCA and PCA member). I’ve maintained this vehicle with the intent of owning it a long time, and keeping it in OEM-quality condition. I’ll rate each major category on a 1-10 scale for a 16-year-old vehicle, with 10 being show condition, 5 being average for age (compared roughly to what I’ve seen on other eBay ads, etc.), and 1 being unacceptable.
-Body / Paint: 9/10. Color is consistent and clear coat shines well, with no sun damage / etc.I wet sanded and buffed / polished the clear coat when I purchased the car, for maintenance purposes, and its shine remains deep and consistent. In addition, I had paintless dent repair performed (for any dings / dents in the body), by the technician who works for Ferrari of Silicon Valley.Only one dent (caused by an errant baseball, between sunroof and top of passenger door) was not fully addressable from a perfectionist’s standpoint.Normal chips / etc. are present from age.I have gauged the paint, and I believe the hood was repainted at some point- quality is quite high, but I do not believe the paint on the hood is original.Windows were tinted by a prior owner; there are a couple of flaws visible in the film in the rear window under certain light. There is minor curb damage on wheels.
-Interior / Electronics: 8/10. Leather (extended leather, including dash, door sills, seat backs, etc.) shows no material wear, and has no punctures.Treated with Lexol as needed.Carpet is clean and coloring is consistent. No pixel failures, and OEM stereo / navigation / computer works as expected- but note that it will very occasionally reset with a blank screen- presumably a wiring harness issue somewhere, but unclear.Driver door tweeter cover is dented.Door lock actuators appear to be slowing, so certain of them may require replacement in the near / medium term.Air conditioning, seat heat, etc. work as expected.
-Engine / Driveline : 8/10.No mechanical issues in either system during my ownership, and all necessary / scheduled maintenance has been performed.Starts as expected, shifts properly, makes ample power, oil consumption is ~1L / 750 miles, which I understand is typical for this generation of M cars.No oil leaks.I have always used name-brand (typically Shell or Chevron) 91-octane fuel, and either Castrol TWS or Liqui-Moly 10w60 full synthetic oil.Note that the car has a secondary air system malfunction (fairly common on E39 M5s) that triggers a check engine light. I have not repaired this, as the repair is largely considered a waste of money- the car passes CA smog without issue, so the only practical flaw is an illuminated CEL if not cleared.
-Suspension / Brakes: 9/10. Handling is excellent, with straight, consistent steering and smooth brake feel with good bite.Front rotors (Centric / StopTech, at 95k miles) are slotted (an attempt to address occasional rotor warping), and rear rotors should be replaced soon due to wear (have a new set on hand).OEM Lemfoerder control arms / bushings are ~5k miles old, and I don’t know of any suspension issues- though to be clear I have not recently checked these components thoroughly.I have driven this car on a race track probably 3 times, and in all cases it performed very well with no issues aside from the brake fade one might expect on a 4,000-lb. sedan that’s slightly out of its element.Tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sports installed at 91k miles.
-Other: Headlights are European OEM Hella units, and gauges are OEM silver-faced units, I believe from a later-year E39 (both added before my ownership).Lower front bumper plastic (a common wear part on these cars) has been rebuilt (using fiberglass for strength) and repainted, and has proved to be more robust than original against occasional parking space curbs, etc.Windshield wiper inserts should be replaced soon due to dryness, and an oil change is approaching but not imminent (per dash indicator).
