1950 Cadillac Other Description

Incredible find: here’s the story

Several years ago I’m at an Auction in Florida near my home and while looking over the cars I see this 1950 Cadillac Convertible literally parked in the far corner of the auditorium. It stuck out to me for a couple of reasons. You could see even from a distance that a tire was flat because of the cars stance. Upon close inspection all the tires were low on air and one was totally flat, the car was very dirty and the battery was dead. I had tried to start it to work the windows, lights, etc. but to no avail. It was as three day auction and this car was going on the block until Sunday and literally was one of the last 5 cars to be auctioned that weekend.

I originally had no plans to attend the auction all three days much less to the bitter end on Sunday but as I browsed through the cars on that Friday and the auction began I found myself going back again and again to this car. It appeared to be completely original. So then I did a little research on my IPAD and decoded the data plate. Paint code 3 (Lyton Green) YES, Trim code 51 (Dark and Light Green Leather) YES and Top code 1 Tan (Yes) and I even see the Protect-O- Plate under the hood that appears to be original as well and the odometer read 96,000. I’m more interested now.

I go to the auction office and ask for more info on the car. It was being sold by an absentee owner and was going to be handled by the auction house at no reserve. In the folder I learned that it was a two owner car out of Pennsylvania and was completely original (except for some paint work over the years) there was the original bill of sale and all of the originals books that went with the car when it was new (I have included in the pics). My interest was surely peaked when I went home that night. Next day Saturday I didn’t go back to the auction and pondered returning on Sunday to see the fate of the 1950 Cadillac Convertible.

I decide Sunday to head over to the auction again for my interest and curiosity was peaked. Surely by now the car would have a charged battery, tires filled with air and the car detailed? Nope, the car was just as I had original saw it on Friday except now a transmission leak was starting to peak out from under the car. I thought to myself it is still early and they would eventually attend to this car. When the time came for the car to take its place in line some air was put into the flat tire and it was jumped started. It started easily and ran well with no smoke and very quiet.

By the time the car hit the block very few bidders were left and this auction was almost over and before I knew it I was the owner of this very original car. Right place right time I guess. I went back the next day and paid for the car and had it flat bedded a short distance to my home.

50 Caddy arrives at my home

Drained the gas tank and blew out the lines. Cleaned the carb and points and the car started very easily and ran very well it is very whisper like quiet. Over the next couple of weeks I changed all the fluids and gave the car the once over. I did the following:

New Coker WW radials all round along with a front end alignment (car drives beautiful and dead straight)

I had the Sombrero hubcaps polished with new center medallions installed (originals in box)

New all rear lenses, replaced all bulbs (originals in box)

New upgraded headlights for safety (originals in box)

New 6 volts battery and battery cables (original cables in box)

Rebuilt the generator

New grounding straps engine to firewall

New convertible top and window solenoid on hydraulic pump

New fuel filters, plugs, points, condenser, cap, etc.

Since that time I have put a few hundred miles on the car and it runs and drives beautiful just like a car that is all original and has never been apart.

I cleaned and detailed the car and was amazed at the beautiful shine that the paint still has but not without nicks, scrapes and scratches BUT NO RUST. The stainless, chrome, emblems and badges for the most part are outstanding. A near perfect steering wheel and instrument cluster, an indication of an incredible original and well-kept car. Convertible top and windows work well as does everything on car except the radio.

The car is completely original (except for some paint work), you must see and drive this car in person to truly appreciate. I have a lift at my house and will proudly put the car on the lift to show you a completely original and rust free undercarriage. I have included some pics of the underside but it does not do it justice. In person you can see that this is a real outstanding rust free unrestored car.

For the last several years the car has been kept in my climate controlled garage under cover.

Thanks for your consideration.
