The Charger was introduced in 1966 as a mid-sized luxury sport model for Dodge in response to the Ford Mustang, AMC Rambler Marlin, and Plymouth Barracuda. All of these cars shared a modern fastback body lines that were quite attractive to buyers. Dodge decided to revamp the Charger in 1968 with larger, more pronounced body lines. These second generation versions are generally considered the most desirable for collectors, and continued through to 1970 with subtle revisions year to year. The final year, changes included a full chrome surround of the front grill with an absence of the center divider, and electronically actuated headlights versus the previous vacuum operated units. Bolder colors were introduced, and reverse side scoops found their way to the doors for R/T optioned cars. Today, Chargers continue to get the hearts racing of all muscle car collectors who find them in restored condition. This example is no exception!
We are very excited to offer this 1970 Dodge Charger R/T Hardtop finished in super rare Ice Blue Metallic(B3) over Medium Blue(EB5) vinyl interior. This stellar example was found by the previous family owners in late 1999 and immediately underwent a complete, photo documented rotisserie restoration with outstanding results! Fitted with its original, numbers matching 440ci V8-4bbl engine, it was factory rated at 375 horsepower and equipped with a 727 TorqueFlite Automatic transmission. The option list is very strong and include power steering, power brakes, factory air conditioning, A01 light group, front bumper guards, wheel lip moldings, deck lid spoiler, white vinyl roof, door edge guards, woodgrain sports steering wheel & interior trim, door panel map pockets, solid state AM radio, longitudinal body side stripe, rallye gauges with Tic-Toc-Tachommeter, electric clock, front & rear deluxe seat belts, remote driver’s mirror, and chrome tipped exhaust!
This example was said to have been sold new from Signal Dodge in Mehlville, MO and lived the typical early Missouri lifestyle. When located in 1999, the car required a complete disassembly to make sure the car was properly prepped before metal work could begin. The bare metal presentation resulted in needed repairs to the rearmost portion of the car, primarily the rear trunk floor, frame members, structural cross braces, and finally the rear quarter panels. Inside, the driver’s side floor pan was also replaced. All metal work was fully documented and professionally executed. Once completed, the body panels were prepped, primed, sanded, painted, clear-coated, and properly color sanded to outstanding show worthy results! The interior received an all new Legendary Interiors OEM replacement kit, all new weather stripping, fresh exterior decals with 440 hood banners, rebuilt suspension, braking system, fuel delivery system, and more!
The engine was bored .060 over and fitted with custom racing pistons with overlapping rings retaining a 10:1 compression ratio, crank turned .030, all completely balanced & blueprinted with rebuilt heads fully ported & polished with new valves (oversized intake valves) & guides, roller camshaft & rocker assembly, electronic ignition, rebuilt original 26” radiator, and high flow oil pump! Dyno tested to 480hp & 550 lb. ft. of torque. Visually, everything looks completely stock right down to the original intake & exhaust manifolds, with overall factory presentation including air cleaner assembly. The original transmission is included with the sale but was swapped for a Keisler A41 4-speed electronic overdrive unit for improved street and highway performance! The same is said for the brakes now finding 4-wheel disc brakes at all four corners! The original rally wheels & tires are also included but the vehicle is now presented with new 14” Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle white letter tires. Lastly, the rear axle ratio was changed from a 3.55 Sure-Grip to a more highway savvy 3.23 Sure-Grip. All work was completed by July 2001 and it has been shown regularly since. The spare tire, jack, lug wench, carpeted floor mats, storage cover, workshop manual, restoration photo documentation, and trophies are included. It received honors that include Carlisle All Chrysler Nationals with a 1st place win for 1968-1970 Chargers in attendance and a Mopar Muscle Magazine Editors Choice pick by Jerry Pitt. You would be hard pressed to find another car this well optioned, and restored to this caliber for the money. We ask that interested parties act quickly!
