Fairlanes have long been one of our favorites. Add in the 427 hood, a well built 428 and a 4 Speed and we are swooning. There is something primal about a whole lot of cubic inches churning to the beat of a big lumpy cam with throaty exhaust. You just can’t deny that feeling.
This Fairlane is a very clean example. The paint & body work are quite nice. The paint is nice right down to the rockers. Up on a lift it looks nice as well, most cars fall apart when you are looking up at them, this car is a refreshing example. Panel alignment is excellent, especially considering that the hood is a fiberglass unit. The trim and bright work are nice but there is some sun fading on the rear bumper and tail light bezels as this was a California car for much of its life.
The interior looks great too. Very nicely upholstered Black Bucket Seats keep you in place in a very comfortable interior. The back seat has enough room for actual adults so you could easily cruise this car with friends.
This Fairlane started life out as a S-Code 390 so it carries a desirable pedigree for both investment and structural upgrades. It is no secret that the 390 was not the ultimate performance engine it once was. So, a well massaged 428 was tapped as a well deserved upgrade. The 428 has Eagle H-Beam Rods, ARP Main Studs, Comp 292 Hydraulic Cam, Ported Aluminum Edelbrock Performer RPM Cylinder Heads, ARP Head Studs, Billet Rocker Stands, Roller Rocker Arms, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold, MSD Billet Distributor, High Capacity Oil Pan, Hooker Super Competition Ceramic Coated Headers, Ceramic Coated ‘X’ Pipe, Remote Oil Filter System and MORE!!!
The engine is reported to have roughly 1,000 miles on the clock. Of course it sounds like God’s Fury and has INCREDIBLE TORQUE!!! However on the street it performs well with excellent street manners. This is an excellent cruise-in car.
All that engine without a 4 speed would be a sin, so who wants to be on God’s bad side, certainly not the builder of this car. The Bullet-Proof Toploader 4-Speed is shifted through a Hurst shifter. You can row through the gears in this beast without worrying about a weak transmission or a missed gear shift.
Out back the 9” is spinning 3.50 gears in a Detroit Locker unit and 31-Spline Axles. This is the Rare & Correct ‘Fill-Plug’ style rear housing too.
So, if you are in the market for a Cool Muscle Car that can back up the reputation, give this Fairlane a good look.
You will be glad you did!
