1979 Ford F-150 Explorer Description

You're bidding on a used 1979 Ford F-150 Fleetside Pickup Truck with the Explorer trim package. I acquired this truck in 1981 from my father-in-law who had bought it new and used it as his work truck for about a year. So, while I'm not quite the original owner, it's been my truck for 35 years. The truck has never been wrecked (although it did throw a tire once which resulted in some damage to the left rear wheel well) and has spent its entire life in Orange County, California and not near the ocean. The front clip and tailgate are not original as the truck was stolen and stripped in 1992 and those parts were chopped.
Here are some basic specs:

  • 460 CI (7.5L) V8 with Holley 4 bbl carburetor
  • Automatic transmission
  • Power steering
  • Power brakes
  • Full-size bed
  • Dual 22-gallon gas tanks
  • Power steering
  • Original (mostly) interior
  • After-market single-DIN AM/FM/CD player
  • Original wheel covers but missing the center badge
The title is clear on this truck and overall, it's in pretty good shape for its age but it does need some work and paint. There's some rust in the front of the bed by the cab and some more around the rear window where the boot for the shell used to ride. The front clip is from a 1976 F-150 (same series) and has a little more rust inside the engine compartment.
The engine runs great but needs some work. It has less than 100K miles on it following a complete overhaul but it sounds like a rear main bearing went out and probably the rear main seal with it. If you're interested in keeping the monster 460 then it will need some fixing. But if you're thinking of swapping that out for a 302 or something a little easier on the gas mileage, it won't matter. The transmission was overhauled at the same time as the engine and it works perfectly.
I've been talking about restoring this truck for a couple decades but never seem to get around to actually doing it. I've collected a lot of parts over the years so there are some extras:
  • OEM (used) dash pad
  • Additional set of original wheel covers
  • After-market chrome grille (new)
  • After-market headlight surrounds (new)
  • Boxes of miscellaneous parts: door handles and locks, window cranks, etc.
  • Boxes of miscellaneous electrical parts, harnesses, wires, etc.
  • Miscellaneous bits of body trim: "F-150" "Explorer" etc.
** SERIOUS BUYERS ONLY **
Please do NOT bid on this truck unless you're serious about buying it! If you place a bid and then change your mind, let me know and I'll gladly reverse the bid. I've made every attempt to include as much useful information as I can but if you have any unanswered questions, feel free to contact me. I will post additional photos, descriptions, etc. or if you're in Southern California, we can make arrangements for you to swing by and take a look. I don't want to waste anyone's time, nor do I want mine wasted by people who have no intention of following through.
Payment & Delivery:
I accept all forms of payment but prefer PayPal. Payment is expected within seven days of the close of the auction. Keep in mind that the truck is currently located in Southern California. It will be the buyer's responsibility to make arrangements to get it anywhere except about a 10 mile radius from my house. (If you're within 10 miles, I'll drive it over.)
Warranty & Conditions:
The items included in this auction are mostly used and in varying states of repair. The truck runs but due to the bearing problem I wouldn't recommend driving it any great distance. I have provided a number of photos which cover most of the truck and as much information as seems important. If you have any questions, want to see additional photos, or would like to see the truck in person, please contact me via email before bidding.
Thanks for looking at my truck!
