1998 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
1998 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Description
I bought this Jeep in April 2014 with just over 90k on the odometer and it now has just about 111k. So I have put about 8,000 miles on it a year, usually a lot in the spring, summer and fall as it is then my daily driver.
If you are looking for a Jeep Wrangler, you will find that the combination of automatic and 6 cylinder (4.0L) is pretty rare early on in the TJ series and usually just the Sahara and other upper end models. I have owned Jeeps and Wranglers for 20 years now and driven them all from 4 cyl, 5 speeds to the anemic 4 cyl / automatic combo and will only own the 6 cylinder in the future!
It took me about 3-4 months to buy this Jeep, most of the automatics are the 4 cylinder, or have super high mileage approaching 200k. This is good in that I see similar Jeeps with 180-220k listed here on a regular basis and this engine is known for it's long term endurance. But if you search Autotrader, 300 mile radius, most of this era is still selling for over $10-12k and often lifted, etc.
If you want a STOCK Jeep, this is the right one for you. You know it has not been lifted / abused off-road and the depreciation will be very slight over the next 100k. Compare the price of this versus a 200k Wrangler Sahara and I think you will see that you will depreciate maybe .05 cents per mile at most!
This Jeep was a Dual top model from the dealership so it has both the Hard Top and Soft top! The soft top is in fair/good condition. Since I park it in the garage, the sides and rear stay zipped out all summer long and the doors off so has not been an issue at all!
The interior / floorboards were all coated with bedliner and I put the neoprene waterproof seat covers on all three seats so with the carpet removed there are no worries about getting caught in the rain! The seats are in good condition, no tears or rips as of 2014 when I covered them, have not looked since. The Sahara have the really nice / denim feeling cloth seats, much nicer than the vinyl from the X and Sport series.
The hard top was faded like most of the tan tops from this era. We actually painted it in the fall of 2015, I can tell you that paint code is VERY expensive per quart, $300+, but it looks great. I put all the carpet back in and with the full doors, carpet and hard top this is a very nice winter Jeep too! Soft tops by themselves are pretty chilly in the winter months otherwise.
The tires were brand new in 2014, Michelin, 30x9.50 just like original spec, they are really deep tread, 20k miles on them now and no sign of wear. I would compare them to a BFG Long Trail, so less aggressive than the All Terrain series. All 5 wheels are the Gambler / 5 hole style including the full size spare.
No issues, well maintained, new serpentine belt as of last oil change, A/C blows cold, Heat blows hot. Previous owner had dealership respray all the underbody again flat black, no rust issues. Radio is stock cassette (ha!) and has the overhead sound bar with aftermarket speakers / upgraded. This does have the tow hitch already installed and wiring harness with 4 pin plug and tows small trailers very nicely.
This is a great Jeep, I am not in a big hurry to sell, I will likely be replacing this with another Wrangler that I may build to be more aggressive. I just do not want to lift or do any kind of trails with this Jeep it is too nice. Plus I love to buy and sell Jeeps, I think this is my fourth or fifth Wrangler since 2000 or so?
Let me know if you have any questions, but if you are wanting to secure a rock solid STOCK Wrangler that is low mileage and not abused, this is the right one at the right price.
