1982 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series Description

You are bidding on a 1982 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel. This is a perfect car for anyone who loves diesels, old school Benzs, or someone looking for a classic/restoration car that is reliable enough for a daily driver and easy to work on. The car is located just south of Philadelphia, PA (about twenty minutes south of the airport) Please read the description and study the pictures carefully. I have nearly a hundred pics of the car here http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jde681jde68/library/

I purchased this car 3 years from a neighbor. My original intention was to drive it for a while and then pass it on to my daughter for her first car. I mean could there be a better first car than this. The car is a veritable tank. Anyways my plans fell apart because my wife absolutely hates this car. I have no idea why. I have had other classic cars before this one. I even used to flip them a few years (check my feedback). She never reacted to a car like she did to this one.

I bought this car from a guy that lives in our neighborhood. It was his Mom’s car and she passed it to him when she could no longer drive. She was the second owner and if I recall correctly she bought it when it was two years old with about 20,000 miles on it. She then drove it from 1984 to around 1999 putting roughly 40,000 miles on the car. She was a local real estate agent and she concentrated primarily on her immediate local area. After she passed the car to her son it was driven little. I bought the car with 65,000 miles on the clock.

I put some money in the car…new tires, filters, glow plugs, batteries, trans service, and left rear lower control arm. I have some service records but not all. My earliest record is from 1999 and around 60,000 miles.

The car was my daily driver for a year. I parked it when I got a little Honda to use as my daily commuter and was going to wait for my daughter to turn sixteen and then turn the car over to her.

That’s when the wife started to go berserk about the car. I held out as long as I could. It would come up, we would argue, then it would be forgotten. But it increasingly kept coming up and she finally wore me down (sorry to disappoint you). So it’s offered here with a reasonable reserve, as is where is, with no warranties expressed or implied...

Anyone looking at this car should know that 3.0 liter 5 cylinder turbo diesel motor is the one of the best, if not the best motor, ever designed. Legendary for attaining extremely high mileage (think 900,000 miles) with excellent reliability, these cars are still in service as taxis in many countries around the world.

The Achilles heel of the W123 type Mercedes was always rust…but this one is in incredible shape for its age. While not rust free, it has limited rust and I would bet that it would be hard to find one in better shape on the east coast for this low reserve price. All the windows and the sunroof work. The car runs great and when you drive it you feel like you are unstoppable. I love driving this car.

Here are all the known issues with the car…

  • The door makes a “popping” sound when you open it
  • There is a minor diesel leak
  • The wheels are rough (except for the spare which is great shape)
  • Power antenna does not work
  • Original Becker radio does not work
  • The lights for the instrument cluster do not work (I think it’s a bad rheostat)
  • The original blower motor is out of the car (I still have it—it was working intermittently I was hoping to troubleshoot it but I wasn’t able to –aftermarket ones are available)
  • There is some apparently minor rust on the car (see pictures)
  • There are minor imperfections on the paint
  • The tach works intermittently
  • Power door locks used to work (but I unplugged the vacuum for them)
  • There is a hard shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st that smooths out after the car is warmed up (these cars are known for hard shifts)
  • The hood was replaced by the previous owner (it was damaged by something falling on it)
  • The hood insulation by the windshield hangs down
  • The driver side front fender was backed into…I had it repaired and repainted along with the hood
  • The back deck under the rear window is faded and brittle from UV exposure
  • There are two pieces of missing wood trim on the dashboard (I have one piece)
  • The wood trim on the glove box is loose but still present
  • There are some minor imperfections in the interior
  • The driver side map pocket is badly scuffed

I have done my best to describe this car as honestly and completely as possible. I strongly urge you to study the nearly one hundred pics ( http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jde681jde68/library/ ),come and inspect car before bidding if possible. Again the winning bidder gets this car AS IS WHERE IS…THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED!! Finally while I believe this car could make it across the country as is…I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU HAVE IT TRAILERED TO ITS NEW HOME…like I said earlier I have been around classic cars long enough to know that trailering is a wise move.

This really is an awesome car, I hope it gets a good home.
