I have a very rare 1979 Mercedes-Benz 280S W116 S-Class. This car is extremely rare car as it is a full European model with a 4 speed manual transmission and the M110 inline 6 motor. These cars were never sold in the United States with a manual transmission this car was imported. It has European bumpers front and rear, European headlights with the adjustable headlight switch inside the car. The engine is an inline 6 that is carbureted from the factory so it does not have the complex Bosh fuel injection system. I am a big collector of Mercedes with a focus on S-classes. I have seen very very few W116 cars in the United States with the manual transmission as they were never sold here. Any Mercedes collector will know how rare of a find this car is. I bought this car with plans to fully restore it. However, plans have changed and I will be putting new avionics in my airplane this spring so what I had planned to spend on the restoration will be going into my airplane instead. I will try to describe the car in the best detail I can from the good to the needs attention. It has 169,883 miles on it and runs and drives and stops very well. It does not smoke at all and every gear works just fine as does the clutch. I have had this car up at highway speeds with no issues at all. The front euro bumper has been removed and is in good shape and included with all parts. I have driven the car exactly as it is in the pictures with no issues at all it is a fun S-Class. The car is very solid but it does need body work (rust/rot repair) in the lower rockers and front clip. The floor pans and trunk wells and floor are solid as a rock no rust or rot. All doors and door jams and frames are solid with no rust or rot. The roof, hood and trunk have no rust. Both euro chrome bumpers are in good shape and the mounts on them are good as well. All the bright work/stainless on the car is good as well. The glass is all good no cracks or discoloration all windows are manual crank windows (another European feature) There are European headlight assemblies included with the car one has a broke glass lens. The previous owner put the current headlights on the car. The interior is in very good shape. Headliner is good with no stains, tears or sagging at all. The rear seat and passenger seat look all but brand new they have no wear marks or tears. The driver seat does have a tear in the backrest and armrest. The carpet and pads are still good with no tears nor are they falling apart. They could use a good shampooing and detail. The tires are good and the wheels are Mercedes rims that are faded but the spare is like new. I did not detail the car for the pictures I just gave it a quick rise. I wanted to show it in its true form not all dressed up to hide something. This S-class is so very rare it took me forever to find a manual W116 car this car as it sits is fun to drive. Something about a S-Class with a manual is just extra enjoyable. The car does need to be restored in my opinion and is a great candidate for restoration. I have had a few European model Mercedes restored before and this car is better shape than any of the others I started with. There is a clean title. Please ask any questions you may have. I have included over 70 pictures to show everything on the car. |
