Rare 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, Twin Turbo, AWD, AWS, Highly Modified & Fast!
1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Description
I have an extremely rare and extremely powerful 3000GT VR-4 Sports Car for sale. I love this car, but have to sell to pay off another vehicle. They was approximately 15,000 VR-4's ever made in Nagoya, Japan. Three thousand were made in 1991 and 26 cars that exactly match this one ever made. This car has absolutely everything and was way beyond it's time. All-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, twin turbos, electronic-controlled suspension, active aero, so on... The 3000gt even has a switch button for the tune-ableexhaust. Higher mileage at 189k, but just like its age, it doesn't show. I've wanted one for years, and finally found the perfect one in this car. They are actually going up in price and getting harder and harder to find, especially the true, top of the line VR-4's.
The exterior is in great shape for it's age. Passion fire red with normal chips, small scratches, etc. No bad sun fading and you would never guess it's age off of the exterior overall. There is some chrome peeling on a couple of the wheels, one definitely worse than the other. Two of the wheels don't have any. The back windshield wiper/arm was pulled off but included. The only thing on the entire car I know that doesn't work is the headlights stay up permanently, (they don't retract/drop when you shut the car off).Tires have plenty of tread left in them.
The interior is very clean for the age. Aftermarket leather style racing seats on corbeau brackets with manual sliders on both sides. Black corbeau 4-point harnesses with quick and easy buckles. There is also a NRG steering wheel installed, (comes with factory steering wheel with cruise). No check engine or other trouble lights! 3 Autometer gauges installed in A-Pillar; Pyrometer, Boost Gauge, and Oil Pressure gauge. AEM Wideband Air/Fuel Ratio gauge front and center on steering column, (which did crack the plastic but is still secure). Custom harness bar/rear strut brace with back seat removed. Kenwood aftermarket CD Player and aftermarket speakers. Short throw shifter with metal ball shift knob, plus long stock shifter with leather shift knob. GReddy boost controller, Apexi Air/Fuel Controller and even a Blitz Lap Timer with other handy functions. Cup holder insert is in the arm console! (Usually missing). Cigarette lighter is pushed in center console for some reason, but still there and wired up. Power windows and power locks work perfectly. Rear hatch struts still strong. Menthol boost additive in the way back. Newer black carpet covering the entire floor.
Mechanically, this thing is an absolute joy. I've actually taken it on trips around theMidwestand wouldn'thesitateto do so tomorrow. Clutch, steering, braking, everything feels/works great. Newer valve covers and no leaks on the car. Aftermarket everything under the hood. Piping, clamps, hoses, air intake, spark plug wires, on and on. Everything went through. The previous owner spent a lot of time and money making it look amazing. The motor was replaced with one from a 1992 VR-4. The car comes with aGetrag-manufactured 5-speed manual transmission with aftermarket clutch, (firmer but not too tough). Big aftermarket exhaust that doesn't sound like a ricer, (surprisingly not all that loud at all).
*Full disclaimer, I'm not a mechanic, but have had it gone through by 2 different mechanics who didn't find anything. I did not build the car, and have only done minor things since owning it. That being said, I have no documentation for specific things, like I'm pretty sure that the turbos are not stock but can't prove yet. I am working on going through the car slowly and compiling all the information. I've done my best to point out everything I can think of, but please ask if you have any specific questions. I've also included a lot of pictures to help your decision, but can provide more if there is something specific you want to see.
I have the clean title in hand. The car had always been garaged and not driven in the winter. It needs nothing but someone to drive it. I am asking below book at $9,000, but am open to offers. The book value is actually more than twice what I am asking, and cleaner ones go for three to four times my asking price. Unfortunately, the cars are getting rarer and the price increasing as such. Any questions or offers please reach me through here. If you're in the area, you are more welcome to look at it in person or test drive it. The car is also listed locally for sale. Buyer is responsible for pickup, but I can help accommodate.
A brief 3000gt History:What Mitsubishi set out to do was to cram every bit of high-tech gadgetry available into its 2+2 3000GT, making it one of the most advanced sports cars on the planet. With all these goodies crammed in, the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 demanded aggressive styling. Working jointly with Chrysler’s Highland Park International Design Studio, the stylists at Mitsubishi’s studio in Okasaki, Japan, created a car that makes a definite performance statement. The 3000GT is awash in air dams, air scoops, vent ducts and power bulges. All are functional, except the rear side strakes that are undoubtedly there to remind people of the Ferrari Testarossa.
The 3000GT with its 3.0L DOHC engine is first and foremost a grand touring sports car, with the VR4 running as Mitsubishi’s flagship. This 320HP twin turbocharged and intercooled model was considered to be the most technologically sophisticated of its competitors, with features such as All Wheel Drive, 4 Wheel Steering, Active Aero, Electronically Controlled Suspension, Tuneable Exhaust. These electronic features also gave the VR4 a 3700+ lb curb weight; in spite of its weight (and perhaps because of AWD) it compared favorably with its competitors in handling and speed, accelerating to 60mph in five seconds and running the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds @ ~ 100 mph. Many owners insist on improving its performance even further through aftermarket modifications.
In North America, Mitsubishi enjoyed success in the early years as the 3000GT outsold the Nissan 300ZX, the Mazda RX-7, and the Toyota Supra combined; however, like the other Japanese supercars it fell victim to over-optioning and overpricing. The VR4 reached exotic prices approaching $50,000 and Mitsubishi would kill the 3000GT in 1999, although sales of the Mitsubishi GTO continued in Japan. The market had shifted towards minivans and SUVs, and the automakers responded accordingly. The 3000GT and Dodge Stealth still live on today, maintained by their small group of enthusiastic tuners.
