1980 Nissan Other Patrol WMG160 Description

This is a 1984 model. It is nearly impossible to find an unmolested Nissan Patrol MQ (160) let alone one in such a beautiful restored condition. These truck were extremely popular for their off-road durability, heavy duty drivetrain, and versatility, especially this "wagon" version that came with fold away 3rd row seating. The MQ is unique in that it has solid dana style axles, manual locking hubs, leaf springs front and rear, and a cast iron gearbox case to name a few unique features.
This truck was imported from South Africa where it was meticulously restored. I spend over a year working on the truck before deciding to bring it to the US. I bought this as an all original truck, with exception it had aftermarket wheels and a aftermarket security system. I believe I am the 3rd owner. The entire truck exterior was repainted, and the interior trim and upholstery refreshed. It comes with new rooflining, new vinyl-cloth combination on all seats, new trim panels and a new radio/cd unit with 4 speakers. No expense was spared, many new parts, for example a windscreen seal, alternator, battery, a/c piping (old one had a leak), header with exhaust system, etc. Also comes with a new set of wheels and new high profile tires - exceptional sturdy 235/85-16's. The spare was also upgraded, I still have the original unused, believe it or not, "split rim"with a 7.5-16 tube tire, if the buyer wants it included in the sale. The bigger spare do not fit on the tire carrier below the fuel tank.
There are no rust issues on this truck. I cannot detect that there was ever any accident or body repairs done, no body filler ever used on this truck. Personally I have cleaned up the undercarriage and frame, brush and washed it by hand. Only a few sports of minor surface rust were with Eastwood products, along with a final coating of fluid film to ensure the excellent condition will be preserved for many more years.
These trucks in South Africa were assembled with the Nissan straight six 2.8 motors. Its a slightly de-tuned lower compression Z car motor, with the sought after P79/N42 head/block combination. Nissan configured this for more torque at lower rpms. A recently service included timing checked, new oil, plugs, valve adjustment, suspension greased, coolant, belts and hoses checked, etc. It runs flawlessly and sounds just right. With the weber carb it starts and runs smooth and cruise effortless at the legal speed limit. On city road driving it gives me on average 16 mpg, not bad considering the low gearing of the 4 speed transmission. Shifting through all gears are good, brakes work well (front discs, read drums) and it steers straight with no wobble or strange vibrations.
It is a right hand drive with manual transmission, don't bid if you'll be uncomfortable driving it.
The vehicle was legally imported, VIN inspected and registered in North Carolina.
The odometer reads just over 230,000km, which is close to 144,000miles.
There are probably only a few of these trucks in the US. Although the truck is rare, original Nissan parts are still available. These trucks were made, sold and serviced in several countries across Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia. Since I own 2 of these trucks, with another one currently in restoration (the tan colored patrol in one of the pictures), I have bought several parts online with no problem getting them shipped to my address in the US. On the title the vehicle model is listed as a Nissan Safari - code WMG160. In most other countries the Safari was marketed as a 3rd generation Patrol with codes 160 or 260 and later year facelifts (4rd generation) became the Ford Maverick or Y60.
Few things you should be aware of. The security system is disconnected, The AC blows cold however the fan or compressor make a bit of low buzzing noise. I have no plan to resolve this as the noise is not too excessive to concern me. The heater water hoses has been disconnected by the previous owner. I have no plan to resolve this either, I have not had time to investigate if there's an issue with the heater unit or perhaps a leak that caused the previous owner to decouple the water hoses. There is a very minor oil drip from the rear engine seal. It is not concerning me enough to think it is time to replace the seal. There is a very very small chip in the windscreen. I bought a DIY kit to fix this, just have not gotten around to do it. There is a very small leak on the top driver side of the fuel tank. It only drips when the tank is very full (3/4 full or more) and has built sufficient pressure. It could be the clamp on the fuel supply or return line, or a leak in the tank. I bought a sealant kit to fix this, however the tank would need to be dropped to work comfortably in the space, I just have not gotten around to do that. The weatherstripping around thedoor frames need to be glued in a few places, I will try do that before the auction closes.
This truck can be an excellent base for a very capable offroader, or collector show vehicle, or even a daily driver. I am only selling the silver patrol because I don't have storage for all my hobby cars and since I have 2 patrols my preference would be to keep working on the modified one (the tan patrol in one of the pictures).
