Wagon's are on the up and this original engine, paint, and interior1992 Chevy powered Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser is one rare find in this greatcosmetic condition. Most wagons of this generation were used for work or for families and if any are still on the road, they are mostlyeither rusted or banged up with ripped up interiors. Not this one! The cosmetics are amazing, almost hard to believe for 24 years old! The mechanics are another story. The engine can either be fixed or this car would be the perfect candidate for a crate motor. It's almost hard to believe that this car has just over 200k (about 206K now).The previous owner loved it, maintained it, and drove it. He put on17 inch chrome American Racing mags,removed the custom cruiser badging for a sleek look, put on some pin stripping, a custom grill, and removed the hood ornament (put in a light).The 17 inch rims slightly changed the speedometer readings and the rims rub the wells a little when you turn the wheel really far (can be fixed with wheel spaces). The rims are in good shape (will shine with polish), minor rusting on some bolts.The original light blue paint shows very well and the body is pin straight with perfect gaps. The doors close perfectly and there is no rust or signs of body filler. Almost all electrical components work, including rear window release. The tail-gate opens out and down as it should. The original paint has a wear spot on the roof and there is some wear on the side view mirrors and doors. The glass has no cracks but may have some scratches here and there.There is some minor wear on the bumpers and body.The rear moon roof is in excellent shape. The interior is near perfect. The vinyl (or maybe it's some kind of leather) seats have no rips andare not reallyfaded. The dash is nearperfect. The original carpet is old but still presents itself fine. The radio was updated with an older Alpine I believe. There is some kind of equalizer and a sub-woofer in the back hidden in the stock storage compartment. The system works but is older and tired.The antenna only goes up 1/2 way when you turn the radio on but stilltunes in and gets radio stations, I think it has a CD player, not sure if it works. The alarm doesn't work nor does the key remote open the locks anymore. I havetwo sets of keys and one looks to be the original GM keys and two or threealarm remotes (remotes don't work, like I said). The rear defog doesn't work. The AC was converted by my mechanic, however, it still needs work. The heater blows, but only on your feet I believe. The car doesn't leak any fluids. When I first got the car, it leaked some anti-freeze, but then it stopped. On occasion, I do hear water moving around in the dash, I believe this is a sign of the heater core needing replacement. The car doesn't blow any smoke but white smoke. She doesn't really burnoil, but has the typical high mileage engine oil burning smell coming off the engine, not the exhaust. Common to small block Chevy's, she has a high mileage lifter tap on the passenger side after she is warmed up, not loud, can only hear it when the hood is open.
When she runs, she runs very strong! This engine was maintained. I can't really say the engine is tired, if you can fix it, well she may still go for a while.These engines can run past 300k with TLC, even with some oil burning and or engine ticks.The previous owner did some engine detailing to the original engine compartment, and yes, the engine compartment is as clean as the rest of the car. He did a great job painting the original air cleaner and the addedchromeChevy valve covers (Ram Jet style) theyadd a nice touch, but remember, thisengine is show and no go - it's an original305, low HP. According to the previous owner, the tranny wasreplaced not long ago, original automatic with over-drive. I also have some paper work from the previous owner. My receipts and previous owner receipts come with the car. I have some notes from the previous owner showing howhe drew up plans to convert the wagon to dual exhaust.I don't think it's true dual, just a "Y" set up to keep in the cats. Remember, this carno longer has to meet smog regulations, so modificationsare now unlimited(wow, a crate motor with power would be so sweet for this car). The exhaust is in pretty good shape and the custom chrometips have seen better days, but some polish might improve thema lot. The car isn't loud, but the 305 sounds strong and the exhaust has a nice tone. I saw the car under a lift once, and she has a very clean underbody, makes sense, goes with the rest of the car being clean. Since she has been sitting for a long time, some condensation and rust flaking have occurred in and around the exhaust tips (minor). There might be some minor surface rust flaking hear ands there on the underbodybecause the car has been sitting, she needs to go now and be taken care of.
The bad is what makes this car a "flipper's dream "or a great hot rodproject car for a father and son.I only recommend this car to somebody who is very mechanical. I have had it about a year or longer and she has just been sitting in front of my house. After having the car for a few days I returned the car to its original ride height because it was lowered. This car has new shocks, springs, a-arms, brakes, and tires. I have about 4k or so in receipts. I also tuned her up with new wires, cap, rodor, etc. I figured the car was now safe and ready to be my everyday car. I noticed some ant-freeze leaking, but that stopped. I also noticed that the heat only worked on feet mode, but I never fixed that, nor did I fix the rear defog, AC, or the water sound in the dash. I figured I would get to that in time, however, then the stalling started. When the car first died, it was a simple fix, she needed a new battery. The problem is that she kept stalling after the new battery was put in. She presently stalls as you come to a stop or when she is idling. At idle, the stall can turn into a rough idle or go completely dead. She usually goes completely dead when you're coming to a stop, but always starts right back up. Everything was checked, vacuum leaks, hoses, lines, idle control valve, etc. She will run, still has great oil pressure, I don't think the stalling is related to the mechanics of the engine. It should be noted that the intake manifold was changed because when the thermostat needed to be changed, it was seized to the intake, so, the only thing that can be done was change the intake (changed, stock original). Well, the stalling problem is a mystery and she has been sitting in front of my house for over a year and it's time to let her go.
I think I might have found some info on the stalling problem. The stalling happened ever since the battery was changed. The car's computer slowly over time adjusts the idle of the car as the throttle body gets contaminated. Now, when a battery dies, the computer looses it's new idle memory and returns to the idle memory as to when the car was new and the throttle body was clean. So, the solution to the stalling problem may just be a 2-4 dollar bottle of Gum-Out, the throttle body was never cleaned by me. I can't guarantee this will work.I did replace the computer and that did nothing proving that the throttle body might just need a simple cleaning. You will notice two computers on the passenger side floor, one is connected and one is not. You just have to simply put it in place and put the plastic cover back on and you will have an extra computer. The battery is presently disconnected andall hardware to reconnect the battery is on the front passenger floor next to the extra computer.
The other day, aftermany months, I decided to put a new battery in the Wagon and she started right up. The 305 will never quit! I managed to get her to the gas station to put some gas in her and some air in the tires. I kept her from stalling by covering the break as I came to a stop and pumping the gas pedal. Once home, she stalled in front of my house.This time, evenwith the new battery, she failed to start. I believe from sitting either the alternator or starter went.I haven't washed the car in about a year and the car still looks good and clean. The car was waxed a lot and the light blue colordoesn't show dirt. With a good wash and detail, she can be shown as modified butunrestored with the perfect amount of patina, even the engine compartment is in great shape, just needs to be cleaned up, no major oil spills (dirt and dust from sitting).
It's very hard to find a 92 Olds wagon in this cosmetic condition, however,the purchase has to make sense because it needs a lot of mechanical work. Remember, the photos are pure and honest - the car hasnot been cleaned for over a year, it just sits outside, can you imagine the potential this car has when it is cleaned and mechanically sound. This car can be really cool if you have the ability to fix it.
