1958 DeSoto Adventurer 2 door hardtop
1958 DeSoto Adventurer 2 door hardtop Description
This is an extremely hard to find 1958 DeSoto Adventurer 2dr ht. Only 350 made. Not sure how many are left but I have heard that there are less than a dozen. Has a good running 361 V8 wedgehead engine with factory dual Carter AFB four barrel carburetors. I looked up the engine number and it is a 361 but a later engine, not the original the car came with. I have the production order and that shows engine number: LS3-S 21132. The number on this engine is: VT 36 and then just below that: 4 10. By tracing the casting number(1945429), I have figured out that it is a 361 Chrysler engine from 1965. According to the original owner's wife, he thought he was having the original engine rebuilt in the early 1980s. It wasn't until years later someone showed him the engine numbers. The shop may have pulled a fast one on him or maybe the original engine had a cracked block in it. When I bought the car, the original owner's wife was trying to remember why the engine needed to be rebuilt but couldn't remember exactly why. She had told me that the engine was overheating a lot before the rebuild, which may explain a cracked block. She believed that the dual carb and manifold set up were transferred from the original engine. Just wanted to be upfront about the engine not being original to the car.
I have owned this car for 22 years. I bought it from the original owner. Car has always been in San Francisco, purchased new at Water's Chrysler on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. I have put around 8,000 miles on it since I've owned it. It has power steering, power brakes and power windows. All the gauges work, including the speedometer. Radio is not working, blower for heater works but I don't believe there is heat. The trunk pan, floorboards and rockers do have rust as well as the hood. I have an extra solid 1958 Chrysler hood for it. The Chrysler hood is the same but the holes line up different for the DeSoto letters. Car needs paint, chrome is not that great, interior needs work. All the long stainless mouldings are there but most have dings. All the Adventurer specific items are mostly there, the "Adventurer" script along the rear fenders and the "Adventurer" script on the dash and the rear seat. Also has the 150mph speedometer. The only missing Adventurer items are the spinner hubcaps, which were stolen many years ago. I have '58 Chrysler wheel covers on the car which look presentable. Tires are in very good condition. It has current registration through December 2017 with the CA black plates. The car needs attention but it is mostly original and it is a very good driver.
I have tried to present an honest and accurate description of the car but I may have missed something so please feel free to ask questions before bidding. Thank you.
