MATCHING NUMBERS CALIFORNIA CAR, WITH HISTORY
THIS 1979 MG MGB ROADSTER IS IN THE BEST BRITISH TRADITION!
WIRE WHEELS, VERY DRY, BROOKLANDS GREEN (original color)
It doesn't seem all that long ago that it was fairly easy to find a straight, dry, California classic car. After all, when it comes to automobiles, many would agree that California has been considered to be the antique and classic capital of the world! However, time goes on, and perhaps you have discovered, as I have, how challenging it is to locate an honest, original, example in the Golden State today ... or anywhere else, for that matter. But don't despair! For your consideration is this beautiful, matching numbers, Brooklands Green, wire wheel California MGB, built in the best British tradition!
CAR NUMBER: GHN5UL496600G (1979) ENGINE NUMBER: 18V890AEL009091 (correct)
HISTORY: According to the ORIGINAL SERVICE RECORD included with the car this MGB was purchased new by the first owner on August 28, 1979, in Santa Barbara, California. On March 29, 1998 a subsequent owner, from nearby Santa Maria, California, purchased the car, and has owned it for the past 18 years. In additional documentation in his own writing (also included with the car) he has highlighted some of his repairs and improvements to the car over the years, which I've detailed in the MECHANICS section below.
COSMETICS The paint is an estimated 4-5 years old. There is no oxidation and the gloss would attract most to this fine MG as a beautiful car! And here is a plus ... the paint in the trunk and in the engine compartment is FACTORY ORIGINAL, and a good match with the rest of the finish. THAT is rare.
The advantage of older paint is that nothing can be hidden. For example, I have been able to find no signs of cancerous rust in the doglegs, below the doors, in the FACTORY ORIGINAL FLOORS (see photographs), or anywhere else, for that matter. As documentation proves, this has always been a California car, and most likely has been garaged most of its life. If this were not the case the bumpers, for example, would NEVER be in the excellent condition they are today.
All chrome, glass, rubber and lenses are in good to excellent original condition. One exception would be a smaller rock chip that can be found in the windshield higher up, on the passenger side, which shouldn't obstruct anyone's vision. Also, the rubber piece between the windshield and cowling could be replaced. There is a chip on the hood, and some other lesser imperfections in the overall finish.
Includes four MATCHING P185 70R14 radials in very good condition. The interior is original and, in my opinion, looks as it does in the photographs. The top should be replaced, and the dash could be capped (easy fix).
MECHANICS The correct, factory original engine starts right up, runs cool and strong, does not smoke, and has EXCELLENT oil pressure. The 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly, the clutch is solid, the brakes work well and the steering is responsive. The battery retains a charge and is quite healthy. The low miles are believed to be original. Included in the list of repairs and improvements by our subsequent owner of record are rebuilt shock absorbers, new cylinder head overhaul, new catalytic converter, muffler, carb overhaul, clutch, brakes and more. I recently had a local British car specialist change the oil and check all fluids. In his opinion, repairing a worn lifter cam could be a profitable option sometime in this fine car's future.
WHAT WORKS? Among other things, ALL SMITHS GAUGES, including gas, oil pressure, speedometer, tachometer, and heat gauge. Even the clock works! Also working are the twin auxilliary radiator cooling fans, headlights, including high and low beams, tail lights, front and back side lights, front bumper lights, turn signals, including tail light flashers, rear license plate lights, dash ignition and emergency brake lights, high beam dash light, hazard flashers, interior courtesy light, fan, windshield wipers, glove box, interior door openers, interior door locks, window winders, interior side vent latches, forward and back seat bottom adjustments, exterior door handles, trunk lock, driver exterior door lock, top latches, and more. The Panasonic AM/FM radio with cassette tape, and heater have not been tested. Currently the passenger exterior door lock and cigarette lighter are not working.
