BODYWORK/TRIM

An early-build Road Runner that was assembled at Chrysler's St. Louis facility in September of 1968, this spectacular pentastar is one of few cars equipped with W23 Kelsey Hayes road wheels. By December of that year, in addition to issuing a full recall on W23 Kelsey Hayes wheels, Chrysler would no longer allow dealers to stock or sell them. And that makes this already rare Hemi-equipped, numbers-matching coupe all the more exclusive. Those wheels spin under a detailed restoration that was completed in late 1997. During that thorough rebuild, the car's straight body, which includes solid-closing doors on top of great panel alignment, was massaged into virtually flawless surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, a smooth coat of correct Platinum Metallic 2-stage was laid under a correct vinyl roof, correct red side stripes and a correct Performance Hood Treatment. And, according to the car's accompanying documentation, this clean Plymouth now rolls as a precise replication of its Fall 1968 debut!

ENGINE

Toss this coupe's light hood and you'll find an original, 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 that hangs a familiar 2468330 casting number over a matching partial VIN. As Plymouth's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilized cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a glossy, Hemi Orange block that hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by correct Carter carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by factory-spec wires that are snapped onto an old school points distributor. Charge comes courtesy of a tagged MoPar red cap battery. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big, 26-inch radiator that's fitted with pliable hoses via old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the car's Platinum engine compartment is clean and understated... Well, as understated as a classic Hemi can be. The big mill performs as well as it ever has. And naturally, details like correct decals, factory inspection marks, a correct Road Runner horn and a familiar Chrysler washer reservoir have been professionally restored or completely replicated.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Slide under this solid B-Body and you'll find a lucid chassis that's fully sorted and ready for the road. Bright silver paint highlights exceptionally clean floors. Behind the Hemi, an original A727 3-speed hangs a Wednesday, August 28th, 1968 assembly stamp opposite a matching partial VIN. That stalwart gearbox sends power to a correct Dana 60 axle, which spins mild 3.54 gears. Naturally, that spirited driveline pushes a completely restored Hemi Suspension. Stops come courtesy of correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by large-diameter tubes, which bend around an H-shaped crossover and throaty turbo mufflers. And all this MoPar goodness rolls on authentic Kelsey Hayes road wheels, which twist F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sport redlines.

INTERIOR

Swivel this coupe's level doors and you'll find a correct Pewter & Black interior that's functional, straightforward and very livable. A correct front bucket and rear bench seating combination is wrapped in pliable vinyl covers that display hardly any signs of severe wear. Below those seats, stain-free carpet floats color-keyed floor mats around a correct console and simple shifter. At the sides of that carpet, Pewter door panels add texture to Platinum door frames. In front of those panels, a "road runner" branded dash seats rebuilt telemetry above a cool Chrysler Solid State. In front of the driver, a simple steering wheel spins a correct horn bar around a colorful Road Runner centerpiece. And behind the passengers, a nicely finished trunk hides a correct jack and spare tire between a plaid mat and new decklid decal.
