1969 Plymouth Road Runner Convertible (RM27H9G291xxx) 383c.i., Hurst 4-speed, ALL numbers matching original motor, transmission and rear-end, factory F-8 Ivy Green Metallic, fender tag, black convertible top, black interior, power steering, 8 ¾ rear end with 3.23 posi-traction, factory thumbwheel AM/FM radio, factory tachometer, black hood treatment, dual exhaust with factory chrome tips and 14” magnum wheels with redline tires (factory correct for car)
This will be one of the finest original all numbers matching 4-speed convertible Road Runner’s that you will see. This car is extremely rare and will be hard to find another in this condition, originality and a numbers matching drive-train. There were only 1,890 Road Runner Convertibles produced in 1969 and this one is one of 769 built with a 383 4-speed.
The Road Runner just had a recent light restoration including the restored show condition engine bay (with many restored original items), rebuilt original engine, wiring, multiple hand wet sanding and buffing on the entire car, wheels and tires, full exhaust/tips, clutch/pressure plate, check over the entire car and much more! This fine Road Runner is an excellent all purpose car for shows, cruises and cruising! Although not a 100 point concourse car… it will certainly garner respect and hold it’s own at any show.
The previous owner has had this Road Runner for the last 20 years! I believe the 128,050 miles are correct as stated on the PA title.
I typically restore or finish around 10 Mopars a year and have been working on them for more than 25 years and I do everyone as they were my own to keep. I put a lot of time, effort, pride and money in the cars that I offer for sale which is evident when viewing one of my cars compared to others for sale. This is one of the few cars you can view in person and say that it is actually nicer than the photos.
Please call Chad at 412- 496- 1439 with any questions. Thanks!
PAINT, BODY AND FRAME
The body and paint is very straight and in excellent shape. All of the Road Runner’s body numbers match on the radiator support, trunk lip, fender tag and the VIN tag authenticating that it is a REAL Road Runner Convertible. The Road Runner is a factory Ivy Green Metallic (F8) car with black interior and a black convertible top. The Road Runner has had only new quarters and a small paper sized metal patch panel put in the floor at the driver’s side foot area replaced. The trunk floor, floor boards, doors, fenders and trunk lid are all in great shape and appear to be original. The frame is in excellent shape as well as the factory convertible torque boxes and the undercarriage is clean and neat with no rust (you can even see some of the factory F8 green paint in some different area’s on the underside). The body paint was done over 10 years ago and still looks incredible! There are only a few very small flaws in the paint. The very top edge on the RH quarter by the door has a very small paint chip (brush touched up). There is a line/crack in the paint about an inch long in the very left corner of the rounded trunk to quarter seam (between the edge of the trunk lid and rear chrome strip) and the common line/mark under the drivers side door where the rocker meets the quarter. These have been there for years and are not an issue. The bottoms of the quarters, wheel well lips, doors and trunk lip are very nice and clean and not full of filler like most! You can see the perfect factory seams the way it should be. Even the factory drain plugs in the trunk extensions are perfect. The door latches and door strikers were cleaned and polished. The super high-gloss paint was just professionally wet sanded by hand with 1500 and 2000 grit paper to achieve a high caliber ultra finish. This long process alone took over 50 hours and the finish shows it! I would say the paint is a strong 8.5 out of 10. I am also very picky and critical, as well as honest. The Road Runner has some factory original paint markings still visible, including on the differential, rear end housing, torsion bars and the transmission!
GLASS, CHROME AND TRIM
The glass appears to be original factory glass, in excellent condition and only the front windshield was replaced new (PPG). There are only a few very small marks on the side glass and is in extremely nice condition. The front and rear bumpers have been re-chromed years ago and look brand new. The door handles (inside/outside) and driver’s side mirror are newer and in great shape. The trim is clean and was polished for optimum shine. The original wing vent window chrome is very nice with only a few minor marks. The front grill and rear taillights are super clean originals and very nice. The convertible top is in excellent condition and only has one very small mark/tear on the seam (just above the passenger side rear glass) about the size of a pencil eraser. The power top works excellent and also has the correct boot cover.
INTERIOR
The interior is very original and is in extremely nice condition. The Road Runner has newer Legendary seat covers front/back and carpet and also brand new Legendary door panels, chrome arm rest bezels and inside chrome door handles. The dash pad is also in excellent shape. The dash and gauge cluster is super nice and in excellent working order. Underneath the dash is super clean and untouched. All wiring looks excellent and even the circuit board is spotless. All factory gauges work and operate correctly. All lighting works as should including the high/low beams, interior lighting, map light, dimmer switch, reverse lights, tail lights, parking lights, turn signals, four-way flashers, and license plate light. The fan motor, defrosters, wipers, beep-beep horn and E-brake all work great. The AM/FM radio is the new restored original radio with the updated electronics that you can buy (I think these are around $500 in cost). It even has the original white label in the glove box from 1969 with the VIN # on it.
DRIVE TRAIN
The strong running original numbers matching 383 HP makes excellent power and runs absolutely awesome! This engine runs extremely smooth and very easy to drive in any given traffic condition. The 383 has just been rebuilt to stock specs with only a slight upgrade on the cam. The motor was just done in November 2015 and here are some of the new parts: Crower Hydraulic Cam and lifters, total rebuild on the original heads with new guides, hardened seats, springs, valve job and resurfaced heads (over $900 of work alone), push rods, double roller timing chain, head gaskets, honed block, factory pistons with new rings, Melling oil pump, Clevite 77 bearings and much more! I have all the receipts and photos of the rebuild. The 383 has the original stock intake, heads, oil pan and the correct HP manifolds. All the correct engine break-in oils and break in times were done and I only run Brad Penn High Performance oil because it already has the high levels of Zinc in the oil no additives needed! The casting date on the engine block is 6-2-69. The numbers of the top ID surface by the distributor are E 383 HP 6 18 (E=1969 motor HP/ 6=June 18=18th day of month). The sequential number on the lower ID (by the oil pan) is 9G29xxxx. The new carb is a 600 cfm Edelbrock #1406 with electric choke. I have the original Carter that was on the car when I bought it (#4615) and will be included in the sale of the car.
The original #’s matching Hurst 833 4-speed (D21) transmission shifts excellent through the gears and is an absolute blast to drive! It is the best Mopar 4-speed that I have driven! The new 11” LUK clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing (USA made) is extremely smooth and the clutch has that perfect muscle car feel to it! The numbers on the 4-speed ID are 9G29xxxx and PP8332881 (2881 is June 17th 1969 on the build day table). There is also a factory paint stamping of 603 in blue letters on the 4-speed. The 8 ¾ rear is original and has some of the factory paint markings still present. The Road Runner has the original posi 3.23 ring and pinion with a 489 case. The Road Runner has excellent drivability and cools well even in stop and go traffic. This excellent drive train combo runs and drives awesome in all conditions whether highway or city driving!
