Porsche experts agree: the 1984-'89 Carrera is the best 911 ever built.

It is the last 911 to feature a body style now considered "classic" and the first to incorporate technological advancements such as the vaunted BOSCH Motronic engine management.
Not surprisingly, therefore, that the 3.2-liter Carrera smoothly transitioned from contemporary supercar to highly sought-after collectible, coveted by knowledgeable Porsche aficionados worldwide.
The 1985 Porsche Carrera 3.2 Sunroof Coupeé presented here is a prime example of the very desirable "original spec" 3.2-liter Carrera. A US-market car and one of just 1,959 built for the model year, it ticks all the right boxes. It's been a California car from new, has had three caring owners in 31 years, features a great color combination, and is in pristine condition throughout.
Originally sold on February 3, 1985 at Merlin-Olsen Porsche on 15531 Ventura Boulevard in posh Encino, the car subsequently resided in picturesque San Luis Obispo and finally "next door" in Santa Barbara, California, all three among the most affluent zip codes in the entire country.
The factory maintenance book shown above contains about two dozen stamps for service, most from reputable specialist Guy's Independent Porsche Care of San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Let's now inspect this fabulous Porsche in more detail, starting with the trunk.
The luggage area of a vintage, air-cooled Porsche always yields valuable insight to its overall condition, as neglect tends to manifest itself here first. Here, clean original carpeting and the complete factory tool kit are confidence-inspiring indicators.
Stripped naked, the good news continue. Everything we see here is in fine, original condition and clean as a whistle. Unused inflatable spare and factory tire jack are present. And, yes, the trunk light works!
Neither the battery area nor the vulnerable front suspension pan or inner fenders show any signs of corrosion or previous damage. Factory paint label is still attached to the right inner fender.
The pristinely preserved undercarriage shows no hint of rust or accident damage, just factory finishes and German steel. The factory's enhanced corrosion-protection includes liberal zinc-plating; even outside of California this Carrera could conceivably last forever.
Note that the caramel colored areas are not corrosion, but remainders of the transparent Cosmoline rust protection wax, applied 31 years ago at the factory.
The Porsche's sexy and curvaceous body is as straight as it gets, with perfect factory gaps and shut lines. There is no indication that this car was ever involved in any kind of fender bender. Grand Prix White paint is superbly preserved throughout, shiny, without dings, dents, scratches, or other imperfections.
Wheels are superbly preserved factory Fuchs forged alloys, 7 x 16 up front and 8 x 16 out back, with polished centers and outer rims, and shod with near new Super High Speed radials of the correct size 205/55-16 up front and 225/50-16 out back.
Let's look inside now!
Burgundy-colored headliner and sunvisors are factory original and in flawless condition throughout. All the interior lights work.
The iconic 911 cockpit features five large, circular, white-on-black dials with bright orange pointers, a timeless design. There are no unsightly cracks marring the dash top. You can't improve upon perfection! Everything is bone stock and unmodified, save for the Porsche sport steering wheel and an updated in-dash radio with CD-player.
The inviting, 6-way power front seats feature leather in the exclusive burgundy color, matching the remainder of the interior. Everything is beautifully preserved, as you'd expect it from a low-mileage car that's been pampered.
The spacious rear seats don't look like they've ever been used. Push a small red button and the back rests fold down individually as needed to create additional luggage space.
Ready for a test drive?
So are we, but before we take off, let's check out what makes this Porsche tick: its powerful heart!
As clean and dry as the remainder of the car, the matching numbers 3.2-liter boxer, delivering 207 horses at 5,900rpm, runs every bit as good as it looks. Mostly used for long-distance cruising to the tune of just 5,000 miles annually, this Carrera never needed any work beyond regular servicing and has rightfully gained its reputation of being bullet-proof.
There are no odd noises to report, no annoying oil leaks, and there's no exhaust smoke on initial start-up or at any time thereafter. The entire drivetrain has just been serviced and there's no indication that it will need anything other than regular tune-ups for years to come.
Thursday, September 29, 2016, turned out to be another gorgeous autumn day here in Ventura-by-the-sea. With temperatures climbing into the high 70s, we opened the sunroof and headed for the highway.
Driving such a well-sorted Carrera is a pure delight; praised be the German engineers. The car starts, runs, drives, shifts, corners, and stops perfectly.
Especially compared to a 911 from the early '70s, it's just amazing how sophisticated a 3.2 Carrera really is. Whereas Porsche's 2.2 or 2.4-liter Boxer needs to rev its heart out, the 3.2 just goes like the proverbial bat out of hell, from slightly above idle all the way to redline, determined to devour any road.
Returning home, we once again feel confident in proclaiming the 3.2 Carrera the most perfectly balanced classic Porsche 911 money can buy. Unlike some of its earlier siblings, the 3.2 can easily be enjoyed on a daily basis in the year 2016, if so desired.
Be it as a prestigious everyday sports car or a weekend driver, this Carrera provides unequalled driving enjoyment. Keep it garaged, tuned and detailed, and it will live forever while keeping its value, that's guaranteed! And if ever the time comes to move on, there will be plenty of people longing to become the next proud owner of a classic, air-cooled Porsche Carrera with a factory sunroof!
