1955 Porsche Other Description

Up for sale is our 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder recreation manufactured by Vintage Spyders. This is not a typical replica in the sense that is not merely a VW bug chassis with a body kit. This Vintage Spyders recreation features a purpose-built tubular chassis mated to a fiberglass body through thermo-bonding.The approximate date of manufacture/build is 1998.This is a true mid-engine car and handles like it’s on rails! The size, styling and sound all make this a head-turning conversation starter. It’s a great car to share with your local car enthusiast community. This car is a driver and not merely a garage queen. As such, it does show some minor imperfections around the body: mainly the usual minor rock chips in the front bumper area and a slight paint peel driver’s side just fore of the clamshell on the bottom half of the car (approximately 1 inch wide and 3 inches long). The peel has not gotten worse throughout my ownership and I don’t think it will get any worse unless you pick at like a scab.

Worth noting how this chassis differs from a typical Beck chassis:

1) Battery is passenger side in front luggage compartment vs. Beck in the engine compartment; engine oil cooler is present where a Beck usually carries its battery.

2) Note on the engine bay pictures the added support chassis tubes on this 550 Spyder that travel from the top rear suspension connecting points to the top front of the engine bay creating a full engine bay “cage” therefore adding rigidity.Unless you are looking at a suby-powered Beck, the engine bay does not feature a full chassis “cage”.

Motivation is provided by a 2.2L Type 1 VW engine professionally built by Davis Motorsports from Indiana.Engine is mated to a VW 4-speed transmission. In top gear driving 75mph the engine is spinning at around 3k-3.5k RPM, right in the sweet spot for extracting power. This car features dual Weber 44IDF carbs that offer great response and power.

Stopping this lightweight Le Mans racer recreation are unassisted hydraulic brakes in each corner.Everything works as it should including the radio although I must confess I rarely use it. The wheels are the correct 10-hole variety that have beentastefully chromed. The car passed its most recent inspection at the end of October 2016.The only 2 issues with the car are a barely noticeable engine oil drip and it doesn’t have the smoothest of starts on cold days. The cold-day-cold-start issue is mainly because it’s running with race car carburetors without a choke.

This 550 Spyder carries a clean Texas title registered as a 1955 Porsche Spyder.Title is currently held by JJBest with account in good standing so there should not be a delay in getting title back in a short amount of time.

I have taken this car out on small and long trips alike with no issues. This car has taken my wife and I to Fredericksburg wine country here in TX (130-mile round trip) and has also driven the Three Sisters over in Leakey, TX (a little under 200 miles round trip). One of my best memories with this car will be driving the Three Sisters and feeling everything the road had to offer, both through my hands and through the driver’s seat!Auto journalists now-a-days always write about driver involvement and machine feedback. This 550 Spyder recreation checks all the right boxes. After a short distance getting acquainted with the car, you will almost telepathically know its limits and yours. It communicates everything.

This car is truly a treat to drive and you’ll find yourself making excuses to take it out into the wild.I can’t count the number of times I convinced my wife we needed more tortillas.
