1985 Porsche 928 Description
1985 Porsche 928S Background
The 928S was arguably Porsche's top of the line car in this era, costing $50,000 new, the equivalent of $120,000 in today's dollars. All 928's were loaded with amenities and imbued with the most advanced engineering, technology and high performance luxury ethos of the time. The 928S was bred to dominate the autobahn in luxury, with power flowing through an all-aluminum 32-valve, twin-cam, 5.0 liter V8 engine with 288 hp, and a whopping 302 pounds/feet of torque, as well as a transaxle design for near perfect weight distribution. Top speed was rated near 160 MPH. Car and Driver clocked just 5.7 seconds to 60, a mere 13.5 seconds to 100 mph, 14 seconds at 102 mph in the standing-quarter, and 154 mph flat-out. “These are amazing figures for a car with extremely tall economy-oriented gearing,” C/D observed dryly. “. . . [A] substantial improvement over its predecessor.”
Original CA Car. Documented Ownership
Up for auction is this spectacular and original 1985 Porsche 928S from CA, with a build date of 04-85. Her subsequent ownership trail and history is documented in the included paperwork and service records. She was first sold by Westwood Porsche & Audi in CA. After several years she was sold to another gentleman in the central CA area, and in the early 90's she was sold to Paul B. near Fresno CA. Paul owned her up until about four months ago. She has clearly lived a charmed and garaged life, being meticulously maintained under thoughtful ownership.
Maintenance Records from 1986
We have a large stack of maintenance records dating back to 1986.
Low Miles and Drives Great
Having only 77,8XX original miles she maintains her youthful energy and glow. She has loads of presence and authority, and runs and drives as great as she looks. She drives straight and solid down the road with perfect alignment. Steering is precise with no sloppiness, offering excellent road feel. She rides comfortably with self-assurance, yet with a taut and sporty character (see videos).
New Bridgestone Potenza Tires
In the last month or so a brand new set of Bridgestone Potenza performance tires in the stock size of 225/50R16 have been fitted to her original chrome, 16-inch slotted wheels. Each wheel also has a factory original locking lug nut to deter theft. One wheel in particular does exhibit a small bit of curb rash, please refer to the photos.
Brakes work perfectly and do not pull in either direction. Car and Driver termed the system “reassuring, thanks to linear performance, well-proportioned front-to-rear balance, and excellent modulation. These characteristics contribute to the 928S’s ability to stop from 70 mph in just 175 feet. Perhaps even more impressive is [its] ability to absorb triple-digit speeds without fading or emitting any disconcerting squeals, groans or odors.”
Timing Belt Serviced
Her timing belt was changed about a year ago, about 1,000 miles ago, by Jason at WARR Performance in Fresno.
Passes Strict CA Smog Test with Flying Colors
At the time they also thought she might need new catalytic converters to pass smog, but it turns out that it was some other minor issue that was rectified. Her factory original catalytic converters were performing as intended. She passed CA Emissions/SMOG testing with flying colors in mid-April of 2016 (see photo of certificate in photo link). Any car that passes CA emissions testing is clearly running very well and like it should.
Additional Servicing During Last Months
Her valve cover gaskets were replaced by Siegfreids Motors in Fresno on March 1, 2012 at 76,885 miles, as were a full set of spark plugs. After sitting for some time there will be a couple of engine oil drips under the car from what appears to be the oil pan. However, as the car has been driven more as of late, I've noticed hardly any drips at all. Regardless, while driving there's no smell or fumes of oil burning. New air intake tubes and an under hood mat were recently installed. Fluids have been serviced in the last couple of months.
Automatic Transmission Works Perfectly
The Mercedes-Benz derived four-speed automatic transmission shifts just like it should up and down through the gears, smoothly shifting in relaxed driving and crisply engaging when needed under harder acceleration.
ORIGINAL Paint. Accident-Free Body. Excellent Condition
Her exterior remains in her original coat of Grand Prix White, with no evidence anywhere of any repainting, and there is nary a discernible flaw or blemish. Rear and side lights and various bits of trim also remain in good order. Her trademark headlight pods actuate exactly as they should and pop up and down when directed by the driver (see videos). Even her heated headlight washers work! Note too that the rear wiper works as it should.
Interior/Leather Upholstery in Outstanding Original Condition
Open her doors to find original rich tan leather everywhere in the luxurious cabin! It's in great condition without any rips or tears, but there is some light wear evident on the left bolster of the driver's seat. The tasteful door panels are in excellent shape, and the courtesy lights on each of them function as intended. The thick "Silverknit" original OEM carpets still appear quite fresh, with OEM Porsche floor mats having protected much of footwell areas. Her rear seats, headliner and front and rear sun visors (yes, even the rear seat are equipped with sun visors) appear factory fresh. The dash gauges in the instrument pod and switch gear are sharp in appearance and function like they should.
Looking at the dash, there are some narrow cracks towards the middle (see photos) but I have included a new and color matched Coverlay dash cover with the appropriate silicone adhesive should the new owner choose to install it. Both power windows work effortlessly, as do all the power seat functions on both seats (see videos). I've also included two new power window switches, although the existing ones work perfectly (see additional photos). The sunroof does not function but it may just be the switch as I noted in some prior service records that the owner stated that massaging the switch would cause the sunroof to operate until it no longer responded. I'm not one to use a sunroof so I left it alone. I've tried the cruise control and it engages but I couldn't figure out how to sustain speed, so I left it alone as I'm not a fan of those anyway.
Alarm and Stereo
At some point an alarm was fitted, and it still functions perfectly should you decide to activate it. The alarm can be turned off/on via switches in the glove box, and can be disabled via a key in the driver's door jamb. There is paperwork showing her Kenwood stereo/cassette player was installed in 1991, and it functions just like it should, with sound coming through what appears to be the original speakers.
Ice Cold A/C. Converted Last Month to r134a
Last month the HVAC system was attended to and the A/C was converted to r134a and fully charged, with air now blowing ice cold when needed.
Original and Complete Tool Kit, Spare, Air Compressor, Accessories, etc.
In the rear hatch area, under the carpeting, you will find the original space saver spare tire along with the original air compressor and plastic gloves so as not to soil your hands if you need to change a tire. Notice too that the original tool kit is complete, with ALL the tools in place in their allotted compartment under the back portion of the rear hatch. Her original luggage cover remains in its original black Porsche case, and luggage netting/tiedowns are with the car too. The original rubber weather stripping along the leading edge of the hatch is however getting tired, please refer to photos.
Maintenance Records Starting From 1986
There is a full stack of receipts and documentation for maintenance and repairs. Her original Porsche 928S Owner's Manual and Maintenance book with dealer stamps up to 53,000 miles, as well as other original associated materials are included.
Original Keys
All her original keys, including the orange one, are with the car.
Only Original Once. Totally Rust-Free
The body lines of the 928 are iconic and timeless. These exotic machines in such excellent condition are now becoming highly desirable and sought after, seemingly ascending in value on a daily basis. Many of these exotic machines have unfortunately been neglected and left to the elements, or been heavily modified and abused. Here's your opportunity to own an icon that's been well cared for and remains in her factory original configuration.

As you can see in all the photos, she still looks spectacular, and the videos hopefully give you some sense of how well she operates and drives. With her vintage provenance she understandably does exhibit a few minor blemishes, but for full disclosure we've attempted to photograph and/or describe them as best as we could. If you have any questions be sure to ask.
High AutoCheck Score and Clean CarFax
The AutoCheck score for this 928 is very high and well above the range of its peers. Similar Premium Sports Car for 1985 typically score between 24-50. This car scored a 68.
Roadworthy
The car was recently driven about 300 miles on a trip and I have driven it on occasion over the last couple of months with no issue. It has been running perfectly.
Shipping to Overseas/Long-Distance Buyers
I will attempt to be as helpful as I can with accommodating the schedule of any shipping trucks and so forth, but ultimately all such arrangements must be made by the buyer.
Opportunity
Here is your opportunity to acquire a documented and native CA 928S wearing her original paint, that's rust and accident free, and that runs great. These cars will only move up in value.
Bid Confidently
In summary, she runs and drives as great as she looks. She has recently been fully professionally detailed and is ready for her new owner. Turn her key and she starts up confidently, her 32-valve DOHC engine roaring through both banks of her V8. She will then quickly settle into a smooth yet throaty idle that suggests the power she's holding in reserve. We think she could confidently be driven anywhere. Thank you for your interest, and bid accordingly. Thanks for your interest!
