1988 Porsche 944S
1988 Porsche 944 Description
Owned this car since 2012. Clean Texas title and located in El Paso, TX. I bought the car from an owner in ABQ, NM.
All maintenance is up to date. I have a pile of receipts dating to 2004. Short list follows of major items from most current:
1. Water pump, timing belt, tensioner and rollers replaced 2015. Have the old parts and receipts to verify. $1100.00
2. Fuel lines - Lindsay racing return and factory feed line replaced 2014. $150.00
3. Cam chain tensioner and pads 2014 - yes both the tensioner and pads. The old tensioner that came off during the pad swap did not spring back. Had to replace both. Parts alone for this is $400 ish. Have pics, receipts. Also powder coated valve cover during this to black chrome.
4. Tires - Discount Tire direct Cooper Zeon RS3-A 225/50/16 and 245/50-16 with lifetime balance and rotate. May 2015. About 1000 miles on these. $528
5. New windshield with antenna - 5/18/2013 $518.92
6. Lots of maintenance on one receipt - All coolant hoses (heater, radiator, etc), vent hoses (under intake), install of Brey Krause Harness bar and 5 point harness. Total $1431.47. 2/20/2012
Various receipts for generaly maintenance - brake fluid, etc.
7. Fuel lines from gas tank replaced which requires removal of transmission and fuel tank $758.03 10/26/2007
8. Previous receipt for timing belt and rollers/water pump - 09/30/2004
9. Clutch replacement - clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing. 07/02/2004. $1970.02. Mileage 119102. Performed by Radmacher Porsche in Tuscon, AZ.
As you can see all major maintenance items have been replaced within 5k miles. Car originally from Southern, CA and has been a southwest car for it's entire life. Autocheck score when I bought it was 75. History goes back to 1994 on Autocheck. No accidents, clean title.
Aftermarket parts - This car is set up for road/autocross racing. Koni adjustable shocks/struts, performance springs, Brey Krause Harness bar with 5 point harness. Adjustable Brey Kraus sway bars. Car handles very well. Momo steering wheel installed. I do not have the factory wheel unfortunately but they can be found. If the buyer desires I can find and install a factory wheel possibly.
Body - good, not great. I think the paint is original although I have no proof. Lots of rock chips on the front nose. Has some marks from a previous owner loading onto a trailer and hitting front lip on the ramps. Paint is a bit faded but cleans up nice and looks good wet. No peeling. Left rear quarter panel has a bit of paint scraped off and a small dent. This was present when I bought it and did not concern me. Can shoot pics close for interested buyers. Otherwise body is clean and has a few scratches and such as can be expected from a 30 year old car. I would say 7/10 although I am not a professional. From 20 feet it looks nice. From 5 feet it looks 30 years old.
Glass - All glass is good. Windows roll up and down, all switches work as required. All mirrors in place and work. Rear glass squeaks but does not leak. Tint is new last year and looks good although the back glass was not done in one piece. Rear wiper delete with correct plug in place.
Sunroof - operates normally.
Interior - all original seats in good shape. The Driver seat has a seem with about a quarter separation in it. Was there when I bought it. Dash has cracks like all 944. Replaced shifter boot last year with a new one and looks brand new. Original radio has been removed and is included. I have a period correct aftermarket clarion in it now. I can swap back prior to sale if you prefer or leave as is and include original if desired. Sunvisors are in great shape. Carpet in great shape. The mats are red, no idea why but they are functional. When I bought the car it had a red shifter boot and red carpets. They may be how it was ordered. The red shifter boot is included but could use a freshening. Headliner is good shape. I would say 7/10.
Engine - runs great. Starts everytime and has never given me any issues. I used VR 20-50 racing oil in it. No idea what previous owners have used.
Battery - New last year. Bosch premium battery from Pep boys. I think it was $125 or so when I bought it. Receipt can be included for warranty.
Transmission - shifter is tight. I was told 2 owners ago had a new shifter put in but I dont think I have a receipt to prove it. It feels good. These tend to get real loose and sloppy. This one is good. Tranny shifts smoothly. All gears work normally, no grinds. Clutch works great. Gets some stutter if not driver regularly but this is normal.
Other stuff - AC leaks. If I charge it it works for about 2 weeks. It was converted to 134a in Tuscon many years ago. I never bothered with it. You can charge and use or fix it. Leaks power steering fluid. All 944's seem to. Odometer works. Until recently the car required odometer reporting so I suspect mileage is accurate. All gages work normally except fuel gauge. Is shows accurate until 3/4 tank. It does no go all the way to full. This started 6 or 8 months ago. Havent looked into it. All lights work on the dash and outside. Passed Texas inspection last year. Horn doesnt work right so I keep the fuse pulled. When the wheel is turned it honks. It works well enough to pass inspection. 2 stickers on the back of the car. They are in good shape but could be removed. I can remove if desired or leave in place. One is a SW racing series sticker from the cars participation.
Mechanically I would say 8/10 compared to most cars I have seen at this age. All major maintenance has a receipt and proof of when it was replaced over the previous 10-12 years and all within 5k miles.
Other stuff - comes with lots of parts. Full set of relays, yes a full set. No idea which ones work/dont. Got these off a junk yard vehicle cheap go grabbed them. Essentially every relay I could grab. Can send a photo if you want one but should be able to replace about any relay on the car. Original radio, Set of 15 inch phone dials with older road racing tires. Needs refreshing but were used for racing so condition didnt bother me.
This car is a good driver and a good cheap way to get a good but not great 944 and race. As a true S it have 25 more HP than stock 944. All major maintenance is done and the car is sorted. I am asking less than I have in receipts, let alone the car itself. Please ask all and any questions and I will do my best to answer. I do not have to sell but the car lost the spot in the garage to a Shelby GT500 and needs a new owner to care for her. I will not accept Paypal. Cash or postal money order only. Can help with shipping or delivery in the SW for a fee. Redline Racing is a good local Porsche expert who can do a PPI and I can help arrange that if desired. Good Redline Racing and call to speak with Lenny if you want to arrange. No Porsche Dealer locally. Can take any pics up close you need.
