Porsche announced it will produce a special 40th Anniversary 911 model in recognition of the debut of the first Porsche 911 at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. The limited edition birthday car will be unveiled next month. The 911 is based on the current rear-wheel drive Porsche 911 Carrera but offers additional ponies, more handling features interior and exterior styling unique to the birthday car..

The 40th Anniversary 911's 3.6-liter flat-six engine produces 345 horsepower; 25 hp more than the base model 911. The increased power lets the 911 hit 120mph in 16.5--probably about four seconds north of its time slips. A top track speed of 180 mph makes it the second fastest non-turbocharged model in the current 911 line.

Suspension settings on the 40th Anniversary 911's have been pushed more towards the track and away from the street making its handling characteristics better than before. Combined with the standard electronic Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system.

The 40th Anniversary 911's distinguishing styling features include GT silver metallic exterior paint color (exclusive to this model and the Carrera GT), front cooling air openings adopted from the 911 Turbo, body color air intake grills, left and right sill trims, an aluminum "911" logo on the engine cover It doesn't stop there, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels, and super shiny exhaust tailpipes keep the sports luxury look going. And they'll probably sound just as good. A sliding sunroof lets the sun or moon in while bi-xenon headlights with dynamic beam angle control and a headlight cleaning system complete the standard exterior features.

Gray leather fills the interior and is the material of choice for the sport seats (with warmers). The center console, seat backings and dash groove trim strips and handbrake lever side covers are finished in GT silver metallic. Aluminum-finish is a clean touch on the instrument dial rings. A numbered "911 40th Anniversary" plaque rests on the center console.

Porsche will produce only 1,963 40th Anniversary 911 models.
