1996 Subaru Legacy GT Description

This classic 2nd generation Subaru Legacy GT has a full engine/transmission/driveline swap from 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX-STI components, as well a long list of supplementary upgrades. I have been the sole owner of this car for 2 years and made many upgrades. The engine swap was done by a builder in Denver, CO in 2014 when I purchased the car. SHORT BLOCK WAS NEW. Motor was originally paired with a 5-speed WRX trans. The 5-speed could not handle the power adequately, so in Summer 2016 I upgraded to the bulletproof 6-speed from the WRX-STI, also coincidentally a 2006.
Reason for selling: I am going to be moving to an area with emissions requirements (which this car will not pass), and I do not wish to modify the vehicle's nicely powerful exhaust.
Reasons you should buy this car:
- This car was built to be fun to drive. It is. Very.
- Handles great on gravel & snow
- Turbo noises
- Surprised looks from people because no one expects it to be fast
- While it feels like driving a race car, it also has the utility of a family sedan and a back seat where you can stuff your kids. I'm sure it can tow as well if you put a hitch on it. Lots of torque.
Key Features & Specs:

  • 2006 WRX-STI 2.5L Turbo 4-cylinder boxer engine (approx 80k miles)
  • - Engine capable of 300+hp
  • - ARP headstuds
  • - Currently tuned for daily driving
  • - Cylinder heads have AVCS capability (variable valve timing) but it is not hooked up. ECU is from ~2003 era 2.0L and does not support AVCS, so you'd need to upgrade the ECU to use this function.
  • - RC 750cc fuel injectors
  • - HKS blow off valve
  • - Walbro 255 fuel pump
  • - NGK Spark Plugs just replaced
  • - CSF2500 upgraded all-metal radiator
  • - AEM Wideband A/F gauge
  • - Factory Subaru boost gauge
  • - Sparco removable steering wheel
  • - Full 3" straight pipe exhaust with stealth muffler
  • 2006 WRX-STI 6 Speed Transmission (approx 60k miles). Only ~5000 miles on the swap since summer and it's working great. Clutch break-in with proper procedure & patience.
  • Driver Controlled Center Differential is hooked up with aftermarket MAPDCCD controller & g-sensor. Allows you to set custom maps via your laptop for tarmac, gravel, dirt, snow driving conditions, etc. You can also manually or automatically vary the differential lock rate to suit your driving style. In short, it's awesome. For more info go to MAPDCCD dot com where you can check out the software. Download is free. Cable is included. This is a $500 value.
  • - Brand new Subaru OEM Flywheel
  • - Brand new Exedy 15803 Racing Stage 1 Clutch
  • Full driveline conversion... 2004 STI Hubs (Front) with new Timken bearings, 2007 WRX Axles (Front), 2006 STI R180 limited slip rear differential 3.54 gear ratio. Modified Legacy Hubs (rear), Suberdave hybrid axles 2006 STI / 2002 WRX (rear).
  • - 05-09 Legacy GT big brakes upgrade (Subaru), 316x30mm front (they are seriously huge and require 17" rims), 290x18mm rear. All new calipers, OE ultra premium spec with weather protection coating ... NO ABS, but excellent stopping power. Premium brake pads all around. New parking brake shoes.
  • - KYB GR2 Subaru Outback Struts (better handling on street and gravel)
  • - Konig Feather Black Rims (17x7.5"/5x100mm)
  • - Nokian WRG3 All-Weather Tires currently on the car
  • - Aftermarket panasonic stereo with MP3 aux jack. Decent speakers.
  • - Can get 25+mpg highway... but gas mileage can vary significantly depending on how 'fast and furious' your driving style is lol.
  • - Original chassis is a 1996 Subaru Legacy GT. Interior is stock and in good condition. Mileage on chassis... a lot (300k+)... but the car is well built and well maintained and will handle anything for many years to come.
  • - Power windows, locks, mirrors all work
  • - Interior and seats in remarkably good condition for a chassis this age

Extras (not currently installed, but included with your purchase):
- Full set of 4 Falken tires for summer use (see pics)
- A/C Compressor. Car had an A/C-Delete when I purchased it. I got some of the parts to re-install A/C, but then it got cold again and I no longer cared to pursue A/C further. I will send all the A/C parts I have gathered with the car.
- Extra used starter (came with transmission)
- Factory Subaru steering wheel with airbag
Full disclosure:
- Windshield has a crack on the passenger side. Eventually should be replaced. Driver's view is unimpeded which is the reason I have not replaced yet.
- No radio antenna. I didn't care to replace it since I use the aux jack exclusively.
- Exterior looks good from a distance, but if you get close you'll see some wear & tear on the paint & a few small dents that you would expect on a car this age. But hey... if you've read this far... you know this isn't a car you buy for looks! I have included pictures of the more noticeable defects.

-Thanks for your interest. Bid with confidence. You will not be disappointed in this car. It is a very fun sleeper and I hope the next owner loves it as much as I have. You are getting a lot of performance for the price! (try an ebay search for "wrx-sti engine transmission swap" as a comparison)

Car is sold AS-IS. Buyer responsible for shipment or pick up. NO TRADES. More pictures available on request. Ebay limits the amount I can put.

**NO SCAMMERS PLEASE. I WILL NOT SEND YOU ANY MONEY!!**

NEW OWNER TIPS & MAINTENANCE FOR FUTURE (IMPORTANT!!):

·Premium 91+ octane fuel required

·** No matter what, do not bounce off the rev limiter!! Subaru’s don’t like it and it can damage the engine, according to the engine builder **

·Visit www (dot) mapdccd (dot) com tomake your own custom center differential lock maps. Car is set on automatic locking/unlocking at the moment, but for more aggressive locking/unlocking for gravel, racing, etc. you can add your own maps! This functionality alone was $500 to add, so enjoy it!

·Oil & filter change every 5000 miles. 5w40 Mobil 1 FULL SYNTHETIC ONLY. 5 quarts. (0w40 Mobil1 full synthetic is OK for winter, but run 5w40 in summer). Also clean air filter every 5000 miles or less

·Check coolant every 20000 miles, fill from small reservoir above the air filter (do not fill from radiator, or loosen radiator cap!!)

·Replace spark plugs at 50000 miles (just done at 300K so you are good to go)

·Replace gear oil every 80000 miles (Transmission = 2 quarts Redline lightweight shockproof + 2 quarts Motul gear 300) (R180 rear diff = ~1.5 quarts Motul gear 300. Fill it until you can’t get more in the fill hole.)

·Remember in the winter that the brakes will lock!! No ABS!! Use downshifting whenever possible.

·For more power (if you ever need it), find a Subaru tuner to do a “flash” on the ECU. For even more power upgrade the turbo. The engine and injectors can take it. For even more power upgrade the ECU to the STI model and hook up the AVCS functionality on the cylinder heads. This is a perfect platform to build on. Have fun!!
