1986 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Description
I am selling a very clean and well loved 1986 Vanagon Westfalia. I hate to see her go! So much has gone into her I will try to list everything I can.
This vehicle was incredibly well designed by VW from the start and if you know anything about these campers you will be happy to know that all of the necessary upgrades have been done and tested to make her safe, speedy and reliable with many years and adventures ahead of her.
She is very reliable with the 2.5L Subaru engine conversion and can wind up mountain hills with ease and cruise on the highway at 75mph (although I take it easy on her and go around 65mph).
She has a 2 inch lift with 16" wheels. The transmission was redone to handle the more powerful engine.
She has big upgraded Audi front brakes and stops great.
Upgraded sound system.
Tinted windows.
Tons of storage space for your stuff.
Exterior:
- Windows out paint job in '08 with all new seals.
- No flop GoWesty side rear view mirrors.
- Custom powder coated tube steel rear bumper with 2" receiver hitch (only ever carried bikes).
- GoWesty wide swipe windshield wipers.
- GoWesty high intensity headlight upgrade.
- Custom shovel rack on front bumper (very handy).
- 2" receiver hitch custom welded to front bumper (for another 1UpUSA bike rack; this puppy can haul up to 6 bikes!)
- Recent body work to correct chronic Westy rot (rust) under utility ports.
- Fresh rocker panel undercoat.
Underneath:
- New propane tank and regulator and line to stove.
- New Gas Tank
- 16" South African rims with 5k miles on super heavy duty Nordstrom tires (near new, expensive).
- Big Audi front brakes (stops great which is good cause it can get heavy and go fast).
- Brake rotors recently replaced.
- Blistein shocks.
- Automatic transmission cooler.
- No major rust down under (foot wells have a few small spots that need attention).
- Gary Lee rear hatch ladder.
- Custom installed Yakima High Tower roof rack (with galvanized plate steel gusset reinforcing).
- GoWesty window rain guard (essential for hot rainy days).
Interior:
- Sew Fine interior redo. There is a split along the seam which can easily be sewn by someone who knows what they are doing.
- Custom leather steering wheel cover.
- Pioneer stereo/MP3 player with four Infinity speakers (it can get loud)
- Fully functioning two burner stove and sink.
- Refrigerator has been removed, they never worked all that well.
- Custom window tinting all around (no need for curtains).
- GoWesty front privacy screen with window screens.
- Rear hatch screen.
- Map light.
- New water tank lines (the old ones were pretty nasty).
- Auxillary battery under bench with 2 A wire (overkill perhaps).
- New-ish three window pop top tent.
- Front GoWesty bra (shown in some of the pictures).
- South African mud flaps (one is missing, last seen in the Yucantan).
- Low power indoor lighting for the cabin.
- The standard working two burner stove and running water sink.
Engine:
- 2.5 liter Subaru conversion by East Coat Vanagon using Kennedy Engineering parts.
- Runs strong and clean and will flat out level a mountain.
- New-ish starter, cooling system hoses, rear heater core.
There are no engine or transmission leaks. The radiator is fairly new, doesn't leak and has never overheated.
The Full Disclosure Section:
- This vehicle is strong and tight but there are some issues as to be expected of a vehicle of this vintage.
- There is a dime sized rust spot on the rear hatch.
- The foot wells have some small rust spots (a pretty easy fix as they are covered by the rubber grippers and the finish doesn't matter.)
- The skylight leaks (I think they all do). A new GoWesty skylight seal is included but not installed.
- Perhaps as a result of the previous issue, the velour on the underside of the pop top is splotchy and stained; a messy job I just haven't gotten to and can be cleared up with a solution of 25% bleach and 75% water and some scrubbing.
- No refrigerator. A plastic two drawer storage unit sits in it's place.
- She might need a front right bushing soon as there is a squeak coming from that general vicinity.
- The headlight adjusters are cracked and need replacing; these have been on back-order from GoWesty for ages.
- The fuel pump occasionaly hums quietly and may need to be replaced in the future ($100 part).
- No air conditioning.
This is much loved and well cared for vehicle; treat it right and it will bring you and your friends and family years of enjoyment. The design of these vehicles is truly remarkable as you can fly down the highway, sneak down tight trails, haul materials on top or inside, carry bikes and boats and dogs and gear, and still slip into a grocery store parking spot without a problem (besides sleep and eat and change in it). This one drives and stops great, has an astoundingly tight turning radius, and is a blast to drive. Sitting on top of the wheel wells with the huge panoramic windshield is a wonderful experience especially in the beautiful places I hope you will take her.
Hopefully someone out there gets the special-ness I'm trying to describe and will keep Luna on the road, having new adventures and making people smile.
Sold as is, all equipment and accoutrements included (except the bike rack); just bring your clothes and your cooler and hit the road.
Some accessories included:
- Original manuals.
- Receipts for maintenance and upgrades.
- Original VW first aid kit.
- Bentley repair manual.
- Clean water hose for filling her sink tank.
- Extension cord for plugging her in.
- Unfolding camping seat.
- Unfolding outdoor table.
- Unfolding shade tent.
- Map light.
