1974 Volkswagen Thing Description

For sale here is a Volkswagen "Thing", Model Type 181. This is a renowned collectors item with a rich history. This one has been very carefully curated, driven regularly to be kept in neat running condition. It has a pancake engine bored out to 1776cc's for added oomph! The top and windows are in excellent shape.

The tires have generous tread, and the spare is full sized and rear mounted. The VW specific jack is strange and included.The rear seats fold down and lock for a small cargo loading area large enough to take the top down and bring home a standard sized ceramics kiln. This VW comes with an armload of vintage how to books and literature about its strange origins. It also comes with two large totes of extras (hoses, seals, headlights, hardware, window covers, convertible boot, hub caps, latches, belts, alternate style tail lights, etc.)
The car is running and entire, the extras are for when eventually needed as the previous owner never wanted to run out of parts. This specimen is rare in its completeness. The AC unit is present, but non functioning as its original fluid type is obsolete. The floor mats are rubber, and not splitting or cracking at all. Extra options are included, like the glove box cover, which can hold a radio (not included). It is fitted with a "trigger shifter" for reverse gear. One terrifying extra are the Cadillac train horns wired to the Karmann Ghia steering wheel. It has a locking and separate non locking gas cap. It has five copies of the ignition key. It has wiring diagrams, troubleshooting guides, upholstery swatches, and much more. The only flaw is a dime sized cut in one of the back seat cushions. Hardware like the seatbelt hangs and convertible top latches are all metal, the plastic has been upgraded out. Even extra seat springs are in the extras.
I have owned and enjoyed this marvelous and unique vehicle for six years, the former owner owned it until he had to move into assisted living. This has not been passed around or tinkered with frivolously. It has only been serviced by VW Classic specialists. No chain shops or generic service garages.
