Here is what the current owner has said about the history of the car:
"Matt,
here is what I know about our 1960 Mercedes 190 Db. My father was a USAF pilot in MATS, Military Air Transport Service, stationed at Charleston, SC Airforce Base in the early 1960’s. He purchased the car used in 1962 and was, as far as I know, the second owner of the car. There is a Charleston Airforce Base sticker that is still on the passenger side of the front bumper that was most likely placed there in 1962 when he purchased the car. In 1966, the Airforce changed the airlift command from MATS to MAC, Military Airlift Command; the sticker predates that change as "Military Air Transport Service" is still partially visible on the Base sticker. At the time, it was painted the original baby blue color. I’m not exactly certain when my father painted it red, but I do know from pictures it was done sometime in the late 1960’s. I was born in 1967 and always remember it being red; by that time we were living outside of Houston, TX. In 1992, my father gave us the car and I became its third owner. We moved to Michigan later that year and took it with us. In 1994 we had a local paint/hotrod shop strip and repaint the body and it turned out so nice we soon had the interior redone as well. As it had been garaged all its life and never driven in the snow, they found no rust when stripping the car. The chrome on the car is still in the original condition. We lived in Michigan until 1997 and then moved to Coeurd’Alene, ID. In 2005, due to a job change, we moved to Louisville, KY. While in our possession, the car has always been garaged until we move to KY where it sits in storage with a car cover on it. It has still never been driven in the winter and the paint, interior, undercarriage, and body are in excellent condition in my opinion.
Mechanically. All I can say is that it probally has over 100,000 miles on it and has started up and run well since I have owned it. Other than oil changes, I have changed a water pump, main brake cylinder, all four wheel cylinders, brake pads, and several brake lines. That’s it as far as I can remember. At the present time, the brake pedal is a little soft at first start after sitting, but gets pressure after one pump and reverse to engage is a little tricky if you dont know the car. Other than that, I cant think of any other problems with the car.
For sure, it is a fun car to drive and is a real head turner when you go down the road. I always thought I would own it until I could pass it on to my children, but seasons of life change and it needs a good home.
