Inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR of 1955, DaimlerChrysler and McLaren launched the fruits of a joint venture in the 2005 model year. The 2005 Mercedes SLR McLaren was classified as a "supercar" in line with high-end Porsches.
The SLR McLaren's 617 horsepower engine served up "addictive" speed and torque that brought on "mind-boggling elasticity." The car uses an engine developed by Mercedes' high-end AMG unit but most of those engines are housed in steel bodied vehicles, not the significantly lighter, 3,800-pound SLR.
Only 500 cars were slated to be built in each model year, including 2005. That gave the SLR McLaren a price tag out of reach for all but the most exclusive car buyers.
